An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Bad King John is very dark beer with medium blond head. Aroma is sour and roasted. Flavour is better than aroma: lot of coffee, roasted malt and some bitterness in the end. Balanced beer: nice carbonation, still smooth to drink but maybe slightly too thin body. This is coffee-lovers beer and I like coffee so it is pleasant to drink Bad King John.

Dark ruby, almost opaque color, small creamy brownish head. Dark bruned malty aroma: some chocolate in it. Very (perhaps a bit too much) roasted flavor, dark malts dominate the flavor. Light licorice, ash and sweetish milky notes. Not very complex and does not show its ABV much. There is also certain Ridgway-feeling here, can’t describe what it is, but it is similar to many of their beers.

Bottled. Very dark rubyish brown colour with big beigeish brown foamy head. Lacing. Aroma is smoked wet wood, some licorice and dark dry fruits. Also some hints of coffee and roast. Flavour is bigtime roasted malts along with some wooden and caramelly notes. Also some coffee asit warms. Aftertaste is burnt wet wood and some mild coffeeish notes.
