Bottled (vintage 2007, BB 02/2011, Vasa session). Dark murky nut brown color, off-white head. Toasted dark bread, wineous nose. Raisiny flavor, beans, oak, licorice, alcohol. Red wine barrels. Nice roasted licorice aftertaste. I believe that this is now at its peak.

No head. Deep dark red body. Intense sharpish mealy chocolate aroma with raisiny malty notes. Sweet-dryish intense raisiny chocolatey cocoa taste with grassy notes. Mid-bodied. Dry-acidic cocoa grassy straw aftertaste with coffee notes. Very, very nice. Excellent. (0.33l bottle from OleR.)

Bottled. Cloudy dark brown, minimal head. Aroma of coffee and citrus. Sweet, dense and intense with full body and a sbut of syrp. Potent flavour of coffee and licorice, some caramel and citrus lurks behind. Long bitter finish with some wood. Quality all the way.

330ml bottle from the beer shop Barley Wine, Copenhagen. Pours a almost black coloured body under a bubbly ring around the rim of the glass. Spicy to the nose with hints of dark fruits. Prunes and sweet, dark malts in flavour giving the beer a rather winey palate. Dry hopped endnotes. Heavy drinking (shared with Arild and Finn Arvid, 02.06.2008).

Muddy dark ruby brown beer, with a tiny off-white head. Has the right aroma of dried fruits, malt, molasses and brown sugar, with a touch of fruity hops. It’s sweet with rich malt and fruit flavour, and finishes with an alcohol bite. Very flat. I had high hopes for a fine barley wine from a fine brewery, but it’s too sweet and lacks that extra something in my book.

(Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of Myrup. Pours a muddy opaque brown with a very limited, rough head due to an almost absent carbonation. Aroma of roasted malts, overripe fruit and some oxidization. Quite a huge body with loads of caramel, roasted malts, overripe fruit and prunes. Some bitterness. A neat English style Barley Wine, but the flatness deducts in my book. 040408

Bottle 331/490, edition 2007. It pours an almost flat, unclear, brown body, with some beige bubbles on top. There’s some yeast sediments as well. It has a heavy maltyness in the aroma, with enough hops to give it some balance. There’s also a caramel sweetness, a vinous alcohol touch, a slight oxidation, a note of salty licorice, dried fruits, tobacco leaf box (the pallet boxes tobacco leaves are transported in), a bready touch and some citrus. As I enjoy the aroma, it turns out it’s not as balanced as the first impression suggested, it’s sure on the malty side. In the mouth it’s thick, oily and warming, but in a strange way, it still feels rather thin. There’s flavors of fortified wine, citrusy and piney hops, dark sugars, dried fruits, alcohol, some caramel and tobacco, some oxidation and bitterness. The bitterness comes stronger towards the finish, where it overpowers the sweetness the malt is providing. The alcohol also lasts for a while, which in combination with the sweetness and bitterness is giving me a relaxed feeling. For the first time in my RB-history, I was thinking of giving an overall score of fifteen to a beer I gave eight on aroma and flavor. Even though it smells very good, and tastes very good, there’s something missing. Anyhow, sixteen it got, and it deserves it. I am really starting to grow fond of Roskilde Øl, as they make some fine beer, this one included. Rating: 8-3-8-4-16-3.9. (080331)
Bottle 327/490, edition 2007. An oily pour results in a headless, clear, brown beer. Dried fruits, hints of licorice, some alcohol, dark sugar, a little touch of roasted malts, some tobacco, dark caramel and a faint citrusy note on the nose, all just layering up in a very pleasant way. Some signs of oxidation shows up, but I noticed that more than 15 months ago too, so it definately hasn’t deteriorated. It’s full-bodied and sweet in the mouth, it’s low carbonation gives an oily feeling, but the warmth smoothens things out. Dried fruits, raisins mostly, and caramel drives the flavor, with loads of flavors lying underneath. Licorice, bread, citrus, alcohol, tobacco, fortified wine, a hint of roasted malts and probably loads of other things I can’t focus on right now. It’s really complex and tasteful right now, making me look forward to have my last bottle some day. 091124
