This black beer is based on a classic porter recipe, with the addition of roasted cocoa beans delivering chocolate flavours, complemented by roasted, malty and coffee notes, resulting in a smooth, complex character.

Spoons Spring Fest 2025 - dark sweet roasted malty with notes of chocolate, some caramel, smooth mouthfeel and nice body, dark chocolate malty finish.

[Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.] A peaty brown coloured pour with a thick light tan coloured head; toasted grain aroma; smooth and creamy in the mouth with lots of toasted malt; then a dry finish with chocolate and coffee. Smooth and mellow.

Deep dark brown, near black with a frothy tan head and roasted malt with hints of coffee and leather on the nose. Light bodied with dry bitterness, some chocolate and mellow coffee teasing through the roasted malt flavour, finishes very dry

Appearance - opaque black with a thin beige head.
Nose - light chocolate and chocolate breakfast cereal.
Taste - more of the same, really.
Palate - light bodied, sweet then roasty.
Overall - a bit on the thin side, given the style.

Bateman version. A clear mahogany brown coloured pour with a lasting fine khaki head. Aroma is semi sweet, bitty chocolate malts, cocoa, chocolate flakes, dried fruits, tangy apple, bark. Flavour is composed of oily chocolate, tangy dark cocoa, tangy fruit green apple. Palate is tangy, little harsh, oily, mellow carbonation.
