0.75l bottle. Dark amber body, thin white head, lots of sediment. Aroma and taste of caramel, burnt sugar, toast, orange peel and a bit of floral hops. OK beer.

0.75 l bottle from Saveur-Bière. Amber-brown with a fluffy and quickly collapsing off-white head. Hints iof caramel in the nose. Medium-bodied, rather dry with low malty sweetness, some dried fruits and nuts, dusty hops in the finish.

330ml bottle @ Estaminet t’Kasteelhof, Cassel. Pours chestnut brown with good off-white head. Almost medicinal brune taste with fruitcake and a delicious plumminess. If that’s a word.

Dark bière de garde and therefore by definition more of a Belgian dubbel. Pale beige, equal, not very thick but fairly stable head, colour very dark brown with warm orange glow, tiny yeast bits floating around like in the Ambrée. Powerfully malty aroma, lots of fruity esters, chocolate, caramel, raisins, stewed pears, liquorice, banana, some red cabbage (DMS) as well. Rounded fruity taste, dark malts (caramel, nuts, chocolate), fresh citrus touch, sourish and mineral-like carbonation, sweetish but finishing dry with leafy hops, some port-wine-like sweetness and some warming alcohol. Too bad for the DMS in the aroma, otherwise this would have been as good as the Ambrée.

Bottle from Grape & Grind, Bristol. Medium bronw with hints of red and a rocky, off-white head. Sweet caramel, marzipan and prune aroma. Flavour was very sweet, with candy sugar, fruit cake and chocolate, leading to a burnt, creme brulee finish. Too sweet for me.
