Cask @ Hog & Partridge, St Neots. Pours black, barely translucent and flat. Scent of liquorice and plum pudding. Tastes sweet with a pinch of bitter. Sweet gooey aftertaste. Yum.

On cask @ Jolly Brewer, Stamford - Near black body with a beige head. Aromas are earthy berries, lightly sour with roast coffee. Flavours are lots of berries with chocolate. Earthy roast malts with plain chocolate bitterness towards the finish. Fruitier than most porters. Pretty good.

From November 2008: The other Friday, after a really crap week at work I stopped off on the way home to see what was on offer in The Cock Hotel (Wellington, Shropshire). To my delight I discovered this truely wonderful beer. Poured via a handpull into a pint sleeve (I had two pints), it was a fantasticly deep, dark ruby red colour. It looked black when in shaddow, but held up to the light, its true colour could be appreciated. The head was a firm off white blanket of foam, it almost stayed until the end, but didn’t quite make it. The aroma was of smoked peat, liquorice, roasted and toasted plums, coffee and chocolate all in about equal ammounts. The taste was as the smell, but with raisens added and some dark toffee. Just about right in the mouthfeel, not too rich or creamy, but full bodied and wholesome. Two pints was the perfect ammount, walked home a happier person. Three pints wouldn’t have been a good idea, one pint not enough.

Cask at the Cricketers, Croydon. It pours darkest brown, near black, with a thin foamy beige head and low carbonation. The nose is charcoal, liquorice, caramel and a little soy sauce. The taste is charcoal, smoke, liquorice, underlying caramel, roasted malt, nut, dark chocolate, salt and coffee, with a roasty-bitter finish. A really enjoyable cask porter.

Cask at Christian Firtal. Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma of caramel, licorice, dried fruit and dark chocolate. Dry and fruity flavour with a slightly tart edge. Mild roasted flavour notes. Rather complex and one of the best cask porters I have had

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 24/03/10. Near black with a decent tan head. Sweet aroma of caramel, dark fruits and liquorice. Flavour was also dominated by sweet caramel, with some chocolate, fruit and a touch of roastiness before a dry finish. Good.
