A Musette is a musical instrument in the bagpipe family. This is a reference the scotch-style ale which is a popular style for Belgian brewers. Musette undergoes a caramelization process in the kettle, where the first runnings are condensed and caramelized, imparting a unique and subtle caramel character and amber color to the beer. Following fermentation, a portion of it is aged in oak bourbon barrels for three months.Flavors of raisin, caramel, and toasted oak come through.

Refrigerated 2006 bottling. Pours clear dark brown fleeting off-white head. Soft bready malt aroma. Sweet. The flavor is sweet and malty, no hops here. I’m not really getting any Bourbon here but there are a few things going on with dark fruit and caramel. Hides the alcohol well.

Sample at Falling Rock Beer Tasting with Dr. Bill on 10/13/2012. Hazy dark brown color with a medium eggshell white head that diminishes steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Vinous aroma with some herb and yeast notes. Full-bodied with flavors of herbal yeast, earth and fruit. The finish is oaky with a fruity aftertaste. Above average overall.

Medium offwhite head. Brown body with strong carbonation. Earthy caramelly alcoholic aroma with grape and herb notes. Dry wine grape and spicy roasty taste with earthy caramel notes. Mid-bodied. Mealy, faintly hot mouthfeel. Dry peppery spicy roasty aftertaste with syrupy papery strawberry notes. Very, very nice. (0.75l bottle shared by Ole_R.)

Sampled at Max’s American Beer Fest. Pours a translucent amber, brown with a lacing head. Sweet caramel, chocolate aroma with nuts and a little bit of booze. Flavor is the same, nuts, caramel, some milk chocolate. Sweet, crisp finish. A little disappointing as there was very little hop presence and very little wood or barrel presence. Glad I didn’t pay for a bomber.

Golden-amber. Bright. Some caramel and earthy aroma with a grapey fruitiness. Very sweet. Almost a syrupy malt character; not getting much barrel.

March 2008 bottle. Pours with a large, creamy light brown head covering a murky deep auburn body. Good retention. Aroma of vanilla, peet, burbon, alcohol, and some dark fruits. Taste is peety, nutty, alcohol. A bit on the lively side carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. I feel that it is not even close to being worth the nearly $20 I paid for it.
