A Musette is a musical instrument in the bagpipe family. This is a reference the scotch-style ale which is a popular style for Belgian brewers. Musette undergoes a caramelization process in the kettle, where the first runnings are condensed and caramelized, imparting a unique and subtle caramel character and amber color to the beer. Following fermentation, a portion of it is aged in oak bourbon barrels for three months.Flavors of raisin, caramel, and toasted oak come through.

Pour is a murcky thick looking brown with a large white fluffy head. Aroma is strong malts with some banana and yeast. Flavor is candi sugar with honey and a big helping of Belgain yeast. Almost reminds me of a mead. I don’t know who brought this to the tasting i went to but big thanks for letting me sample this fine brew.

Wonderful amber color, generous head. Aroma of Belgian Ale, malty, mature, with a touch of oak. Full body, good malt, strong caramel flavor, to which the oak adds complex elements, and elegant vanilla. The final has a lot of caramel (good malt choice and mash), a touch of vanilla, warming alcohol feeling. Excellent.

Bottled at Københavnske Øldage. Orange, a bit unclear, with a small, white head. Spiced aroma with alcohol and sweetness. Spice, alcohol, sugar, wheat notes and a little smoked note in the flavor. Full body. Sweet and lightly spiced finish. Like it. (070511)

[Corked 75 cl bottle] Brown colour with a slight haze. Rich head. Somewhat spicy aroma with notes of honey and berries. Flavour is toffee and orange peels. The alcohol and the oak aging gives it a somewhat harsh finish. Since this is an "expensive-beer-in-a-fancy-bottle" I must admit that I’m a little bit disappointed; I expected something more. Will probably improve with age.

(Bottle 75 cl) Hazy, amber golden with a creamy, beige head. Vinous, alcoholic nose. Medium body with some caramel, fruity notes and then an almost roaring alcohol. Not particularly balanced. Once again Allagash fails to impress me. 120507

Deep hazy brown/amber coloured body with a nice dense off-white head. Aroma of vanilla pods, alcohol, wheat, malt, bourbon, oak and strong spice. Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour with bunches of oak and even more alcohol and vanilla. Aftertaste has more of the same - a lot of strong tastes that last very long in the palate. Overall, a pretty good beer - strong as hell and great to try. I sampled this 75 cL bottle, created in May 2006, sampled on 18-May-2007, purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
