Brewed in small batches and matured in the brewery cellar, like a fine wine. Made from high quality English malted barley, Kent Goldings hops are added for bitterness and aroma and Bramling Cross to further enhance the character, resulting in deep, rich and complex flavours of sultanas, orange peel and plums. Enjoy as you would a fortified wine, in a wine glass or a brandy balloon, to concentrate its wonderful aroma.

Bottled. A copper-colored beer with a small beige head and lots of floaties. It has an aroma starting off with alcohol and dried fruits, with sweetness, malt, hops and caramel coming later. The flavor is sweet and malty, with lots of hops and some alcohol. Full body and a dry, slightly astringent finish with some roastiness. A nice beer with a nice, long bitterness. (060513)

Cask at the Myrtle Grove, Bingley, West Yorks, 19-05-06. Alcohol very prominent in the aroma, and also gets you straight away on first taste, dark amber in colour and it looked a decent pint (yes I braved a pint at 9%) there really wasn’t an awful lot wrong with this if you coulg get over the alcohol but I just got totally fed up with just tasting that. I have never been that struck on Hogs Back and can’t recall one of theirs that I like.

Cask handpull at Folkestone Wetherspoons. Reddy/chestnut beer with bubbly disappearing head. Sweet hop and candy sugar sweet aroma. Thick in mouth, good hit of alcohol which is warming but not unpleasant. Grapefruit and raisin fruit flavours. Really rather good. Like the other Hog’s Back barley wines/strong beers, this is excellent. Just the right mix of intense hop and alcoholic strength. I then had it the next day and the fruit had developed into strawberry and grapefruit and this was a truly stunning drink. I had 3 halves in an hour and was thoroughly plastered.

Bottle. Amber colour with abeige head.Flavour and aroma is the same: Roasted caramel with sweet malt and some alcohol. Light roasted finish.

A deep red beer with a fine orange head. The aroma is weird sweet fruity with notes of apricot and apples. The flavor is even more weird; malty with corrinander running over the tongue together with the alcohol. It has a good body. Thanks to Alex (fiulijn) for bringing me this.

The aroma is ok, but it doesn't have any rich malt flavour expected in a Barley Wine, where is that gone? and so, instead, there are bold signs of age: earthiness, nuttiness, maybe even cardboard. Not good.

Dark amber color, clean; it has almost no head. The aroma of malt shows clear signs of oxidisation, but also an interesting nutty touch, deep. Round body, oily mouthfeel; malt and caramel flavor, with some signs of oxidisation, liquorice and nuts. Moderate bitterness; no signs of alcohol.

Hazy amber color, with very little carbonation and virtually no head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee, vanilla. Quite good malt and caramel flavor, with a touch of fudge; the mouthfeel is a bit oily because of the missing carbonation; the bitterness is low, the alcohol provides a timid warmth. Good, but the body is a bit slim, and missing more maltiness.

Dark amber, brown color; flat, without head. Strong caramel and toffee aroma. The carbonation is minimal, the texture is oily; it has a very strong flavor of caramel with some toffee flavor too, moderate sweetness, quite strong bitterness, and a light nutty touch. Not as good as it was when fresh.

Amber to brown color; creamy head.
Wonderful aroma, malty, with a characteristic fruitiness (pineapple…).
Full mouth, malty, heavy; caramel, a touch of fruitiness, nuts; perfectly balanced.
Bold, bitter final, very long.
One of my favourite English… Let's drink the second bottle in a couple of years.
