Aarhus Bryghus Kolosterbryg is the very first beer, we ever produced. It was actually brewed for the first time around 1999, at an event, at the open-air museum “Øm Kloster Museum”. The museum is on the site of an old monastery. The Danish king took possession of all monasteries, during the Reformation. in 1556 he sent a scribe to the monastary to record, what he had taken over. The records show, that there at the monastary were three separate breweries: One for the abbey, one for the 200 monks, and one for the small infirmery. The monks had in their cellar more than 20.000 litres of beer, enough for 2 weeks consumption.
To put focus on the huge consumption of beer in the Middle Ages, the museum put up an exhibition about food and drink in that time. We were responsible for the beer part and brewed a beer on the grounds, thus the name Klosterbryg (Abbey Beer).
Klosterbryg is a fusion of an English Strong Ale and a Danish Strong Lager at 6%. It is brewed with the finest English hops, Fuggles and East Kent Goldings, yet fermented with a Danish bottom-fermenting strain of yeast. The result is a delicate, gentle beer with beautiful hints of orange and clementine.

Bottled 60cl (bought from Rema1000 DK)
Pale amber colour, small off-white head. Light caramel, rubberbands in the nose. Light-bodied. Odd rubber band flavour too, spiceyness and some sweetness. Low on malts and hops. But Pale Lager - American ... not.

Flaske 600ml fra Vinmonopolet, Tromsø Langnes. Gyldenbrun. Brukbart skum som daler sakte. Litt lacing. Aroma av malt. Smaken søtlig malt med hint av sitrus. Litt tynn - men fungerte fint som matøl.

Appearance: Clear deep golden color with a white head. Ok lacing.
Aroma: Caramel malty, mild fruity and mild hoppy.
Palate: Medium + body. Tad sweet and a mild bitterness. Average carbonation. Oily texture.
Taste: Caramel malty, mild hoppy. Some fruity notes and some alcohol coming up.
Overall impression: Disappointing stuff. Especially when they call it Klosterbryg. Not much Monastery stuff this. Not much hopps either.
Personal stats: Bottle from local grocery store in Aarhus, Denmark.

Bottle, shared at the Ratebeer meetingpoint, Ølfestival København 2013. Naked surface to a clear, dark golden coloured body. Modest aroma of mid-sweet malts. Grain malty taste added by lemony hops. Dry and mild to the ending. Mainstream lager, far below par for an ipa (Copenhagen, 23.05.2013).
