Beer in Scotland was traditionally categorised in shillings, according to the amount of tax charged per hogshead – a giant barrel of which contained 42 pints. 40/- ale was a very light beer often supplied to farmhands. 50/- and 60/- beers were also reasonably light and mild. 70/-, 80/- and 90/- were progressively stronger, export-quality beers. The shilling system continued to be used to indicate the beers’ quality and was legally recognised in 1914.

Brewed with three different varieties of hop and a multitude of malts, Caledonian 80/- has hidden depths. Satisfying and timeless, this beer is the essence of Scotland in a glass.

The definitive classic 80/- ale: full-bodied, complex malt and hop flavours, dry but spicy. Characterised by a superb creamy head and hoppy finish

Multiple samplings reveal a beer that is always - always - full of butter. Caley 80 is a modest bitter, already malty in character. Caledonian can’t keep the butter out of their beers, however, and it is very noticeable in this product, which in most instances fails to even live up to the most modest standards of drinkability. A full pint of Caley 80 is invariably a challenge even I cannot best.

cask at The Malt Shovel in Edinburgh - Pours mostly clear amber with a small, white, lingering head. There’s a mild aroma of caramel malt. The flavor is also of caramel malt with fairly minimal hops presence. It’s light to medium bodied and while okay, they haven’t exactly put the "bitter" in this bitter.

Stronger, much darker, and maltier than their IPA, with less drastic and interesting hoppiny but more malt character and flavor. Still has a decent hop finish, though very little bitterness.

[Cask at The Castle, Castleton] Deep, inviting brown colour with a thick creamy head. Sweet malt and toffee dominate, with fruit vinous flavours swirling around the edges. Sweet, yet dry and sour at the same time. Good stuff!

Cask at The Bell, Banbury, Oxon 28-12-08. Had three pints of this and found it most enjoyable. Poured mid brown but with good clarity and with a nice white head. Good full on fruity malty beer, little bit of soft fudge and toffee and a nice bitterness. Really decent and in great nick. A6 A5 F7 P4 OV14
