Great White is the beer that started it all – it’s the original gangsta. And it remains one of our very favorites to this day. Crisp and refreshing, it’s everything you could ever want from a Belgian-style white. It’s full-bodied, unfiltered, and goes down oh-so smooth. The hint of citrus and coriander sets it apart from other Belgian whites.

Bottle. Faint lemony aroma, like a sour lemon, not imitation. Poured cloudy yellow with thin white head. Wheat toast flavour, with a bit of citrus, and herb. Bit of citrus in the slim finish

On Tap at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Aroma of grass, coriander and lemon peel. Pours with a hazy gold body covered by a frothy white head. Taste is malty with hay and coriander. Dry and lively carbonated mouthfeel.

Bottle. Bready, light banana, perfumed and candyish notes, dusty/minerally retronasal. Hazy pale, no head Relatively light body, sparkly mouthfeel. Unbalanced and not really enjoyable.

Imperial Pint draft at Llywelyn’s Pub in Overland Park, KS. Pour is clearish golden yellow with a very small white head. This looked very Pale lagerish in the glass. Not bad looking, just not what I expected from a Wit. Aroma is some citrus (orange and lemon), citrus peel, yeast and some ever so slight funkiness. Taste is quite bland, the elements of the nose are present, though very much in the background. The base beer itself tasted much more like a Pale Ale or Pale Lager even then a Wheat beer. As mentioned, the citrus, spice and yeast appear in the taste, but pretty far in the background. Overall, this beer was decent with food, but seemed like a bit of a cop out for the style.

Sample at Alan’s HSC initation. Bottle from Howard’s Market in Tehachapi, CA. This brew is a clear yellow-gold color with a thin white head that diminishes quickly. Spots of lacing. Odd aroma of malt and vegetables at first, but it dissipates into a mild spice pretty fast. Light-bodied with a flavor akin to a Pale Lager. Light hops and spice flavor with a bit of citrus. The finish is mildly spiced with a short citrus aftertaste. Barely average overall.

12 oz bottle. Pours a light golden color. Aroma is yeasty, with notes of citrus, spice, malts. Flavor is citrus, with wheat, and a touch of spice. Overall this is a highly drinkable beer - but not a great representation of a great witbier.

Pours golden to straw with a hint of haze and weak white head. The aroma is mild with candy apples, malt sweetness and a dash of lemon. The taste is much like the nose with malt sweetness mixed with candied apples and lemon. But now a nice floral hop flavor and a touch of bitterness intertwine with the other notes creating a pleasing array of flavors.

This beer came to me in my beer club. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy yellow color with a medium sized white head. The aroma was faint, dry and musty. The flavor was dry and musty with a touch of cardboard and only a vague light fruity element - no spice. Rather uninspired.

bomber - This one was an old bottle, so I was a little concerned. It poured mostly clear and golden with the yeast all stuck to the bottom of the bottle. There was a thin head and a very citrusy aroma including oranges and limes. It also tasted very much of citrus and was quite sweet with no discernible hops presence. There was lively carbonation and a light palate that made for a refreshing though slightly below average wit.
