Fiery, rich and powerful Belgian beer with secondary fermentation

This special beer is deep red-brown and has an intensely sweet caramel character with accents of banana and dried figs. The fire is in the aftertaste, where the chili accentuates the malt notes in a brilliant way and warms your throat.

Bottle 33cl. @home poured into a teku glass. Clear amberbrown colour, tall beige creamy head, good retention a lot of yeast islets, good lacing. Aroma sweet and roasted malt, caramel, liquorice, sugar syrup, dates, raisins, spicy notes, yeast, shy alcohol. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, caramel, raisins, some banana, peppery, yeast. Full-bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation, lingering malty and spicy sweetbitter aftertaste, distinct chili burn in the finish, very nice.

Clear amber with a big off-white head. Caramel aroma. Sweet taste with a considerable chili component. Sweet finish with a burn. Standard boozy Belgian strong ale with a twist. I quite like it.

7 March 2025. At Beer in a Box Adventskalender 2024 Tasting. Cheers to the whole crew!

Not part of said tasting, but thrown in as a little extra. Caramel sauce, liquorice, bell peppers. Sweet caramel, biting chili pepper and bell pepper. Empty, hot, chili-fueled finish and warming vodka-like alcohol. Not the best encounter, but I might retry it if I can share with some friends.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Basically standard Gulden Draak with a surprisingly robust chili burn/flavour. Green chili pepper in the aroma as well. A fun little distraction, though your mileage may vary based on how much you worship the chili!

0.33 l bottle from 'Mr. Hop', best before November 2027. Almost clear, very dark ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently yeasty-spicy and moderately fruity aroma of molasses, raisins, prunes, marzipan, some banana and a touch of vanilla. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, gently yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity taste of molasses, banana, raisins, prunes, marzipan, some chocolate and hints of vanilla, followed by a long, moderately bitter, fairly peppery finish. Medium body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Unnecessary variant, just give me that classic one ffs.

7/III/25 - 33cl bottle @ Gentse Biervereniging adventskalender-tasting, BB: 4/XI/27 (2025-256) Thanks to Rik for sharing the bottle!

Clear amber beer, creamy beige head, a little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very yeasty, bread yeast, some banana peel. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: soft spicy touch, some caramel, chillies, yeasty, banana, sweet, caramel. Aftertaste: lots of chillies, caramel, some banana, bread yeast, ok, chillies are quite interesting in this beer, and stronger than I would’ve expected from Van Steenberge.
