A beer style dating back to the 18th century in England. Brewed for shipment to Russia and later brewed in the Baltic states where it is still a popular style. Our version uses four specialty malts to achieve its dark color and rich flavor. Malty sweet and roasted without any burnt flavors. Hopping is low to allow the malt flavors to dominate.

Sample at the brewpub. This beer pours black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of coffee and malt plus a bit of dark fruit. Medium, dry body with flavors of coffee and hops along with roasted malt in the background. The finish is malty with a cocoa and coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.
