Our resident hop-head Brewer Alana has gone down a road not usually taken for her latest brew: Silence of the Rees Coconut Porter.

But this is no ordinary winter brew.

Like most Porters, we started with a big malt base but then added approximately 90kg of toasted coconut into each tank along with Madagascan Bourbon vanilla beans and rich cacao.

The toasted coconut is prominent throughout this beer; strong on the nose and complemented by creamy vanilla and cacao as well as some mild hops notes. The coconut flavour continues into the front palate, where chocolate and roast malts combine with jammy fruit esters to deliver a sweet finish.

Tap at the Melbourne brewery. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin broken light tan head. The aroma is roasty toffee caramel malt, light vanilla, light coconut, dry charcoal liquorice. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth, dry, coconut, liquorice, roasty, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

(Bottle) Pours black with tan head. Nice aroma - coffee, toast, hints of nuts and chocolate; chocolate notes intensify as it warms. Medium body with smooth carbonation. Nice rich taste, chocolate dominates, some treacle sweetness, hints of coconut which are more prominent as it warms. Some coffee bitterness developing towards the end. Very nice.

Bottle. Very dark brown, small tan head. Malty molasses/ licorice/ mocha aroma with fairly obvious vanilla but not so obvious coconut. Just about medium bodied, modest carbonation. There’s the coconut - smoothing things and blending with the vanilla and chocolate. Not as chocolate crackle-like as some of this ilk and there’s enough bitterness at the end to clip the flavours before they threaten to become confectionery. Fine but not a stand out. [edit] +.1 because the hops are nicely judged.

From a 640ml bottle on 26/6/2017. Pours a deep brown with a medium head. Has a light, pleasant nose featuring coconut and chocolate. The falvour is primarily sweet milk chocolate and cocoa, with a lots of coconut and subtle vanilla in the background, finished off by a muted bitterness. Has a slightly creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. The second coconut porter of had in recent times and both have been excellent. Lovely stuff.
