The Maine Black Bear has a long, fruitful relationship with the state of Maine as the mascot of the University, and this brew is in homage to this fruit loving American native.
Brewed with Rye Crystal malt, Shipyard Rye has a spiced, nutty taste balanced with caramel toffee flavours. As with all Shipyard beers, this brew is packed full of American hops and the Amarillo, Citra, Cascade, and Summit combine for an upfront punchy orange aroma and lingering citrus tangy

Bottle from Torridon Convenience Stores, Catford. Mahogany coloured pour with a white head. Aromas of red apples, toffee, caramel, toffee apple. Same action in the flavour. Not bad.

Bottle shared with Ashton McCobb. Pours clear ruby brown with a thin white head. Aromas of light tropical fruit and orange. Taste has a faint spice backnote on top of the tropical fruit and grapefruit. Clean finish.

Bottle from the Picture House. Appearance - lovely autumnal red with a nice lacy head. Nose - orange and red fruits. Light biscuit spice. Taste - orange and red fruits again. Light rye spice such at the back. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a long dry crunchy finish. Overall - good.

Bottle from Tesco and drunk at home. Clear light cola colour lasting off white head. Quite a hoppy aroma. Some spicyness in the mouth so you can taste the rye. Then a rather good hops on the finish I thought. Yes a pretty good rye ale. I like the peppery hop on the finish but particularly the spicy rye.

Burnt amber beer with a lively head that thins out quite quickly, Smells of caramel and some zesty citrus. Flavour has both of those qualities as well, along with a toasted malt hit, rye and it’s the toasty malt and dry citrus that lingers. Rather nice.

50cl bottle from Tesco’s, Camberley. A reddish amber pour with a ring of cream head; citrusy orange aroma; bready body with some spicy rye and bitter orange; and a sharp citrus finish with lingering rye bread. Surprisingly good.

Mini-session of Irish and other beers on 11th Nov 2016: this 500ml bottle was split between three of us. Orange hue to the brown body, weak head. Citrus notes in the aroma alongside a nutty/rye bread ester or two. Taste wise it dropped the citrus mixed bag for a spicy orange flavouring, again with a nutty/rye bread sort of taste. Light bitter finish.
