Cask at the Pump House, Shirley. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head and lots of clingy lace. The aroma is toasty malt, smoked wood, light fake sugar. The flavour is liqourice malt with a dry mineral, smoky malt, charcoal, light coffee palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at the Pommelers Rest. It pours darkest ruby-black with a decent beige head. The nose is toasty, charred wood, dark chocolate and dark fruits. The taste is smooth, toasty, bitter, dark fruits, berry, charred wood, ashy and mild acidity with a dry, charred finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. OK at best. A bit charred.

Hand-pulled half-pint, shared with Gene at Montgomery’s Tower in Shrewsbury as we continued our Shropshire day. Black, with a red hue, creamy textured tan coloured head. Mild floral nose with a mini-burnt malty aroma trying to dominate. The taste was a bit sweeter than the nose suggested with the malts taking over completely, light chocolate flavours coming through: nice smooth body feel and a pleasant bitterness in the finish (so that is where the hops went).

Cask at the Greyhound (JDW), Maidenhead. Pitch black, with a reddish gleam and a creamy tan head; floral aroma; soft grainy body, and a taste of sweet mollasses and burnt toast; then a creamy finish with a light bitterness. Saitisfying, but rather too sweet for me. Much more in the style of a Dark Lager than a Black IPA.

Cask at The Lord Moon on the Mall. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of smooth dark malt with a fruit note. Citrus? Flavor is smooth dark malt with what seems a citrus hint, and maybe a chocolate note. Mildly hoppy. Sort of stout; sort of not. A mild? Tastes good, and went very well with Tandoori chicken.

Cask-conditioned at the WG Grace (JDW), Bristol 24/9/2015. Dark brown, with a slight, beige head. Chocolate, some toasty malts, a hint of berry fruit sweetness before a dryish finish. Good.
