For this special version of our Aardbei/Kriek, we blended a strawberry lambik and a Schaarbeekse kriekenlambik. The strawberries were sourced with an organic farmer. The cherries were picked with some ten local families. Maceration took over 11 months on average, and most of the lambikken we used were over four years old. The weighted average age on the moment of bottling is over 34 months and the final fruit intensity is 472 grams of strawberries and sour cherries per litre. 100% 3 Fonteinen.

Blend of a Schaarbeekse kriek and a strawberry lambic by 3 Fonteinen, bottled in November 2023 and served at their annual Twists of Fate event today. Off-pinkish white, open, dissolving ring of foam over a hazy 'tomato' red robe with vermillion glow but also, as the bottle is emptied, a brownish tinge hinting at oxidation. Aroma of strong real strawberry, sour cherry also strong but less so than the strawberries, wet oak wood (even vanillin), strawberry jam, red apple, redcurrant, cherry vinegar, autumn leaves, wet leather. Tart onset but very fruity, with a ton of sour cherry juiciness but - unsurprisingly as it tends to provide more aroma than actual flavour - far less strawberry; side hints of green plum and gooseberry. Softish fizz, vinous body, fruit-yoghurty lactic acidity with the sour side accentuated by the Schaarbeekse cherries, which do not fail to provide their fleshiness and juiciness too; retronasally, the strawberry returns, confusing the palate a bit - but contributing to a very red-fruity, tart, slightly astringent, rich finish, where woody tannins and tannic effects from the fruit seeds and skins add dryness against the sour cherry juiciness. Strawberries in lambic - we have scientific proof ever since Hanssens came up with Oudbeitje - add a lot of aroma but little colour and flavour, and this not-so-far-fetched combo demonstrates it all: lots of strawberry aroma, conflicting with lots of sour cherry flavour. Colourful, somewhat puzzling but very interesting fruit lambic by one of its greatest masters.

750mL bottle, pours an opaque dark muddy red with a small white head. Aroma is loaded with gently tart strawberries, tart cherries, and some leathery funk. Flavour is rich, with a wonderful blend of strawberries and cherries, moderate funk, and light acidity. Wonderful blend of fruit. Excellent.

750mL bottle at Lambik-O-Droom. Pours murky ruddy orange with a white head. Fantastic blend of strawberries and cherries on the nose, great funky finish. Flavour has a fresh strawberries and cherries, moderately tart, some dry grass, nice funky accents. Fantastic.
