Keg tap at the Lord Burton (JDW), Burton-on-Trent. Mid-brown and translucent with a large creamy head. Smells slightly of liquorice and Mr Whippy. Sweet and unengaging taste, with a nondescript bitter kick at the end. Weak weak weak palate. Thinner than water. Not good by any stretch of the imagination.

500ml bottle from Tesco. Pours clear dark brown with a long-lasting beige head. Aromas of pine, citrus, light roast, light toffee. Tate is light sweet, some tropical fruit bitterness. Slightly thin, but better than expected!

Tap at the White Swan, Solihull. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off white head and some clingy lace. The aroma is yeast, light hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a crisp, cool, refreshing, light grass hop, earthy mineral yeast palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Quite drinkable but barely got the chinook and citra.Earlier Rating: 2/23/2014 Total Score: 3.4Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a bubbly off white head. The aroma is light malt spicy hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a spicy pepper malt light fruit palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. More of the same from Marstons please. It’s great to see them embracing the craft beer scene.

Keg pint @ Montgomery’s Tower, Shrewsbury. Pours predictably dark with medium off white head. First time I had this it tasted of cleaning fluid. The second, about a month later, not much better. Tastes of nothing in particular. Light, watery, mirage-like roast notes. Could find nothing remotely drinkable in this. Left most of the pint.

Bottle picked up from Tesco Watford split with Sarah at home. Caramel brown / reddy coloured pour with a lasting liht tan foam. Aroma is sweet berry fruits, strawberry jam, brown bread with a hint of roast. Flavour is composed of dark malts, litttle roast, sweet berry, little jammy fruits, hint of earthy pine in the finish. Palate is medium light, semi sweet, moderate carbonation and a little creamy in the mouth. Decent Black IPA.

Bottle from Tesco, Brighouse. Dark red with a very thin head. Hoppy with dark malts also dominating alongside a mild but stated enough sweetness. Has a slight sticky texture but one that’s not detrimental.

Bottle from Tesco, Carrick-on-Shannon [100715]
Chestnut brown, clear, frothy off white head, light lacing
Aroma - Fairly hoppy, grapefruit, citrus zest, some fruity caramel, hint of lemon, then the citrus dissipates after a while, revealing more caramel and soft dark toffee
Taste - Caramel malts, some toasted malts, soft citrus zest, light grapefruit, no tropical notes just general citrus, dab of soft dark toffee, nice flavour, none of that Wychwood yeast
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, soft sweet, fairly bitter, good bitter sweet balance. Finish of soft citrus zest and dark caramel
Overall - More like a ’Brown IPA’ - I thought this was brewed at Marston’s? Certainly none of that Wychwood yeast here. Quite liked this.

500ml bottle: BBD 28 Feb 15. Opened in my kitchen on 13 Oct 14 while cooking a couple of curries. I needed an uncomplicated beer to quench my thirst and something a little different to a lager/pilsner style brew. This fitted the bill nicely. Dark brown with a ruby red hue, the head a full beige topping. Nose was semi-sweet malts with some earthy hop hints. Taste wise it led with mild maltiness and berry notes, a mixed bag of other fruits tempered the sweetness while traces of spice and piney hops came through. Mini-bitter finish and overall not a bad ’kitchen beer’.
