Simple Means — Smoked Farmhouse Altbier. Altbier simply means “old beer” in German, and is traditional to the city and surrounding area of Düsseldorf, Germany. Altbier is a style that excites us because of its simplicity and drinkability. It’s easy to lose count of how many glasses of Altbier you’ve had in a session.

For our take on an Altbier, we felt the toasty notes from the malt played well with a fairly restrained dose of smoked malt. We added 23% beechwood smoked malt from Weyermann to a base of pale barley malt from Blacklands Malt. We then brewed with a fairly large dose of Perle hops at the start of the boil to keep the acidity in the beer from mixed culture fermentation at bay. Overall, Simple Means is an exercise in simplicity and restraint and is just good beer for drinking in our opinion.

750ml bottle. Murky, dark brown colour with average to huge, firm, frothy to creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Toasty, malty and grassy hoppy aroma, smoky and spicy overtones with a touch of ham (Schwarzwälder Schinken), borecole, campfire ashes, slightly disguised hints of malt lozenge and caramel, a fruity touch of morello. Taste is dry, minimally tart, smoky and woody, slightly ashy, hints of leather and sorrel, almost slightly soapy in parts. Rather unbalanced - smoke is an improper feature to contrast with dry- and tartness and pins down the very same scale pan instead.

Bottle (from Koht). Pours murky brown amber with whiteish head. Not a gusher. Aroma is sweet, fruity, smoke, malt. Flavor is sour and bitter, smoke, malt, berries. Finish is dry bitter. Overall: drinkable, but really feels like a beer that has gone sour. Back in soviet times the head brewmaster would have been sent to Gulag for this kind of beer, but in the modern kraft times he can sell it to suckers for 17+€. PS: this has nothing to do with alt. Nothing.

Pours a rich brown from a bottle, white head leaves some lacing. Big farmyard funk, maybe some cheese or feet. Big malt forward with a nice smokiness, but finishes crisp and dry. Complex. Very good beer.
