Barrel-aged ale is not new. It is a centuries-old tradition, from a time when barrels were thought of simply as the containers in which ale was stored and transported from brewery to tavern. Our experiments at Anchor, however, revealed that a carefully considered blend of our own ales, aged in-house in our own ex-Old Potrero handmade oak barrels, results in a unique, complex, and delightfully new tradition: Our Barrel Ale.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark copper with a beige head. Aromas of citrus and rye? Med body or better. It’s sort of rye spicy. Just a little on the sweet side. There’s a subtle oak astringency that seems to turn it towards dry. Very well blended flavors. Nice.

Tap at GABF 2013. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is with fruity and resinous. The flavour is fairly neutral vegetable with a weak liqourice weak fruit resin palate. This beer is so hard to rate but it was very drinkable and I would love to cellar a bottle of this stuff.

The last of a bottle shared by Jer. Pours with a hazed amber body with an off-white head. Aromas are sweet, malty, light oak, estery, vanilla. Flavors are oaky, malty, maple, grainy and some brown sugar. Light bubbles, lightly tannic. I would love to be able to try this again!

RBWG’10 pours light burgundy. aroma and flavors, found the barrel profile to be mild with light udnertones of vanilla and barrel. Light chocolate and caramel malts. Overall palate is thin for a 7.5% beer. Finish has a faint touch of wood/barrel that make this one easy to sip on, yet I wish the barrel was a tad more present.
