The thing about stouts made with additions of things like coffee is, while they taste “just like coffee,” they taste just “like coffee.” A well constructed stout is a study of potential flavors. Both bitter and sweet at once, with just four ingredients aromas can ping-pong between: coffee, chocolate, vanilla, smoke, dark fruits, molasses and myriad others without running over each other. Drink Unjunct and don’t ask us to treat this one.

16 ounce can. Opaque black ink color topped by a large rocky tan head. Earthy roasted malt nose has notes of ash, coffee and tobacco. First sip yields notes of black coffee, tobacco and baker’s chocolate and a viscous mouthfeel. Midtaste brings smoke and sweet black licorice. Finish is bittersweet chocolate and subtle resiny hops. A real American Stout of Cartonic proportions.

Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor, NYC tap: pours black with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate, hints of coffee and roast. Taste is somewhat sweet. Low bitterness. Fat malty body. Not bad.

Draft a RnH - West. Dark brown, minimal head or lacing. Aroma is dark fruit, some chocolate, raisin, fig, some light coffee. Drinks clean and balanced. ABV feels lower than it is. Clever one here by Augie and the crew. Would love to see how it would work with some adjuncts...

Can thanks to Nick. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is roast, cocoa, licorice. Medium body, roast, vanilla, licorice, dry finish, very good.
