Turbodog® is a dark brown ale brewed with pale, caramel, and chocolate malts and Willamette hops. This combination gives Turbodog® its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate, toffee-like flavor. Turbodog® began as a specialty ale, but has gained a huge, loyal following and has become one of our flagship brews. This ale pairs well with most meats and is great served with hamburgers or sausages. It is a good match with smoked fish and can even stand up to wild-game dishes. Turbodog® is also great for marinating and braising meats and cooking such things as cabbage and greens. Colby, Gloucester, Cheddar and blue cheeses go nicely with Turbodog®. It’s perfect with spicy Louisiana jambalaya or Spanish paella. Some even like it paired with chocolate!

Bottle @ Vintner’s 9th av, NYC. Nice head with good duration. Color is brown. Aroma and taste are toasted malt, caramel, nuts and hops. Nice and smooth.

Bottle @ home. Pours a clear, dark brown appearance with a brown head. Brown sugar, chocolate cake, vanilla, nuts, light pine in the nose. Creamy mouth feel. A bit tart fruity, nutty, chocolate, caramel, dessert, toffee flavor. A bit off.

May 2010: Bottle: ordered and drank in the darkness of Mia’s Lounge, Flagstaff. The beer when poured was as black as coal in the almost unlite interior of the bar, it might have been a tad lighter, difficult to tell, you could clearly see however, this beer refused to have a head put on it. Dark, bitter chocolate smell, dark bitter chocolate taste. The beer wasn’t flat, but it seemed very un-carbonated and un-fizzy, like coke goes after being opened for an hour. Reminded me of a weak stout or washed up porter, not overly impressed.

Picked up a 6-Pack of this on a recent trip to Florida. Stored in the fridge and poured into a Stella glass. This was my favorite beer while living in Florida 5 years ago so let’s see if I still find it great.
A - Poured a light brown out of the bottle. In the glass, it looks dark brown to black. Shine a flash light through it and you can see this is still a very light brown ale. The head produced was 3 fingers and leather brown in color. It dissipated to a tiny film of bubbles after about 3 minutes.
S - The first thing I get is roasted malts and some smoked characteristics. There’s a light earthy-ness to this and dry malts that you get form other brown ales. I’m getting nuts like almond or walnut as well but that’s the roasted malt characteristics. No hop profile and no scent from the yeast used at all.
T - The beer has a refreshing taste on first drink. Roasted nutty malts cover the tongue followed by a mild bitterness. There’s a sour taste at the back of my tongue like sewer water but it’s not huge and you have to try to find it. There’s a bit of coffee and cocoa flavor here but it’s very easy to miss.
M - 50/50 bubbles on a mouth swish and it brings out that bad aspects of this beer which is disappointing. Roasted sewage linger on the finish. Light bodied and very drinkable.
O - The taste is overall pretty flat but still very drinkable. It lacks any complex characteristics that other brown ales have. I would have this as a summer beer while mowing the grass. Nice to have but, for the price, not great.

Bottle from River City Cellars, Richmond. dark, ruddy brown with a short-lived, off-white head. Rich chocolate aroma with a touch of sweetness. Caramel and milk chocolate flavours with a gentle finish. Fine.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 9 Aug 2011) Dark reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee. Malty taste with chocolate, dark bread, caramel and a slightly bitter-sweet finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Nice one.

Turbodog was my favorite beer for years and years, until I learned the joys of hops and American Brown Ales. Still, I’ll always have a soft spot for the brew. Not the best-looking pint, dark brown with a cheap, fizzy head. Nose is slightly sweet, with solid chocolate notes. And Turbodog doesn’t hold the same mystique of flavor now, unfortunately, but the requirements for a solid Brown Ale do show up. Chocolate and a mild coffee bite, modest bitter finish with subtleties of mocha and hops. Thin texture hinders the malts; not my favorite anymore, but still worth the occasional roll in the hay.
