Like brewers of old we have used the quieter, colder months to dedicate time and space to lager – this time a Munich Dunkel. This malty Bavarian dark lager was the region’s most common beer style when the Rheinheitsgebot (German purity law) was introduced in the year 1516. Brewed with Munich malt, a dash of Carafa Special II malt, Hallertau Mittelfruh hops and fermented with a lager yeast. True to tradition this beer is unfiltered and unfined.

Bottle at home – bought at Beer Dock, Crewe some time ago (it’s 15 months out of date). This one has a rather strange aroma of rotting cabbages – thankfully not strong enough to put me off drinking it ! Pours a reddish brown with a vivacious but transient cream head. Roast malts and dark fruits on the tongue, with a little chocolate and a sweet finish. Mild carbonation. Overall pleasant.

330 ml bottle. Thanks to minutemat for this beer! Pours with a clear, deep brown color and a tan head. Nose is malty, bready sweet, and hints of chocolate. Taste follows the nose. Hopy finish with a dry chocolate bitterness. Very Good!

330ml bottle from Chez Sophie, poured into a La Chouffe badged tulip glass at home on 21st April 2018. Dark body, brown with a red hue when held up to a light source, tanned head which was a bit thin and weak. Malty molasses rule the nose and taste with a German Black Bread leaning in both the aroma and taste. One of the best 'Dunkel Biers' I have had, fancy it coming from North Wales!

330ml bottle from Chez Sophie. Pours a deep amber, good fluffy off-white head. Nutty malts on the nose. Nice and light on the palate, lightly toasted nutty malt character with some rye bread, and fruit cake hints with a subtle underlying caramel sweetness. Overall quite a well-rounded, pintworthy dunkel.
