Blended Barrel-Aged Ale

Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak-aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.

Release #8 is a blend of whiskey and bourbon barrels ranging from 20 to 24 months. Components include Aaron, Double George, Genealogy of Morals, and Everett.

500mL bottled 12/14/2016, drunk 07/24/2026.
Good pop and there is a reasonable amount of not-long-retained head.
But the first impression is of oxidation; too much dark fruit. Some underlying malt still showing light caramel and chocolate, but scant barrel...not even identifiable bourbon character remaining, at least in the nose. Clean and with no alcohol, however.
It fares a bit better in the mouth, though whatever carbonation there was is mostly gone. But there's bourbon and good fudge and oak, so that's lovely to see. And while there's certainly oxidation present; lots of dark fruit...it's less than what you'd expect for an almost 10 year old stout. The texture here is wonderful - the fact that there's still a good, thick, chewy malt is impressive. Raisins, prunes, black pepper and light cigar notes lingering alongside very gently spicy bourbon. Still quite elegant, but a touch of tight carbonation and maybe 5 years less age would be ideal, of course. Happy to have got to try it, though, and it's still very enjoyable, gaining traction as it warms and breathes.

Bottle poured at Matt's. Much thanks for sharing this one! Thick, dark brown pour. Heavy, sweet caramel, chocolate, and booze aroma. Very strong impression. Robust, roasted flavor. Strong toasted malts, caramel m. Warming toasted finish. Quite the compound barrel character going on with this. Potent, but full of enjoyable flavor. A bit om the harsh side. Could be a little more smooth, but quite a beer as an overall.

Dark brown. No head. There's a nice chocolatey character, like molasses, touch of smoke...appetizing. Soft, sweet, and has a nice soft smokey. character. Nice brown sugar notes. Luscious.

500mL bottle, sent fro yourilevesque (thanks a lot, Youri), pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of bourbon and lightly smokey whiskey upfront, followed by caramel and burnt brown sugar. Flavour is decadent, with fudge, bourbon barrels, caramel and burnt brown sugar. Medium sweet, very barrel-pronounced, and caramely on the finish. Very good.
