Red Lion Inn, Main Street, Birchover, DE4 2BN, England
Description
The Red Lion Inn officially became a brewhouse in 1722 when alcohol licensing became law and the larger breweries we recognise today were yet to exist. In the 18th century, ale was widely brewed in both private and public houses, being consumed by the majority of the general public. In the case of The Red Lion, the well we see today in the floor of the tap room provided the water used for brewing and it is our intention to go back to using this water source in the future In the meantime, we have started brewing on site again, in the spirit of the original brewhouse.
