On tap at Blackstone, pours a clear golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma reveals crisp watermelon notes upfront, with light lactic notes and citrus. Flavour is sweeter, with sweet, tart and crisp watermelon, light lactic notes and a hint of citrus. Juicy and crisp - no salt detected. Doesn't strike me as authentic, but I like it.

On nitro tap at Blackstone, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out light lactose and dry cocoa. Flavour reveals a decent combo of lactose and cocoa. Silky mouthfeel, with a bit of artificiality. Not bad.

On tap at Blackstone, pours a clear deep dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma is pretty dull, with light toasted nuts. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted nuts and muffled earthy notes. Not particularly brown ale-like. Dull and lacking direction. Meh.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige foam. Piney, dank forward hops, with some big tangerine aromas. Tons of citrus zest, light caramel notes. Like a chocolate orange. This is a really well-executed beer that comes in as more of an hop-forward black IPA rather than a dark malt, acrid roasted bomb. Nice take on the style. --- Beer merged from original tick of Dark Matter on 22 Dec 2017 at 22:06 - Score: 7. Original review text: Piney, dank forward hops, with some big tangerine aromas. Sample at GABF 10/07/2017, thanks to my bro for assistance with note-taking. Clear amber-bronze color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lace. Aroma of citrus, hops and malt. Medium body with flavors of grapefruit, herbal hop and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a short hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.

2015, 2016 and 2017 vertical draft at Craft Brewed. 2015: Pours a pitch black with no head. Lots of baker's chocolate and cocoa aromas, some light cinnamon and vanilla. Oxidized and carbonation was most gone. Still great chocolate-forward aromas, but the palate doesn't live up. Hides the booze well though with some marshmallow notes on the finish. Overall: 3.7...2016: Lots of dark chocolate, marshmallow, and coffee. Carbonation is there, body is perfectly balanced and moving towards the fudge, brownie chewy side. Great finish that lingers with cacao nib, fudge and vanilla. Very impressed with this one. Overall: 4.3...2017: Big coffee, and 80% cacao notes on the nose. Dark malt throughout, roasted espresso and roasted cacao nib. Dry and has a touch of heat from the booze. Finish is dry, with roasted malt and chocolate coming out. Solid, roasty finish. Overall: 3.9.
