Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. This was a pretty good Barley Wine. It was a deep dark orange color with a thin beige head. Pointed barley aroma, with equal parts malt and alcohol in the flavor. Overall this was a strong, complex, and very good beer.

Rerate 04/01/2004: Tried a glass of this at the BBC in the Cincinnati airport. This was a lot better than the last time I tried it. This was their current seasonal selection. Clear dark brown with a medium thick beige head. Thin lacing. The aroma is very nutty, along with a touch of malt. Nicely smooth with a roasty and nutty character. Malt and hops are also present in the flavor. The finish is crisp and nutty. Overall my experience with the beer this time around was much more favorable.

11/12/2002 (3.0): Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. This was just called "Nut Brown Ale", so maybe they brew it every year on their anniversary. Dark brown with a thin head. For some reason I got impressions of bubblegum in the flavor along with the malt. It also had a slightly sour finish. This was an odd beer.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. I am not too familiar with Altbiers but this was okay. The other Bluegrass beers I have tried were noticeably better though. Dark amber color with a thin head. Light-bodied malt flavor with a hoppy and slightly nutty finish.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. Dark mahogany color with a thin milk chocolate colored head. Aroma was of faint chocolate. Very good roasted coffee bean flavor that was somewhat sharp. I do think it needs to be tweaked a little for a more rounded flavor.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. This APA was much better than I was expecting. A great example of a microbrew APA, this is exactly how I would make it! Thick head over a dark amber body. Nice bittering effect and good finish.

Looks like Hell - fiery orange-amber. Tiny beads of carbonation run up the sides of my Ratebeer tasting glass to a 1cm head. Spicy aroma - pepper, scotch bonnet (w/o the fire), raisin bread, and some natural (ie. not from infection) band-aid phenols. Thuds across the palate gracelessly. A big lump of crystal/munich malt crash lands in the spice party, sending everthing scattering in all directions. You''ve got alcohol running up my nostrils, stinging. You''ve got overly assertive yeastiness on the back of the tongue. Slight fruity notes (grapes, starfruit, grapefruit) get squashed with a quickness. Such a promising start...what in Hell happened?
