The arrogant bastards at Stone pulled a fast one! This isn't beer; it's really fermented grapefruit juice! Hops are dominating, and the grapefruit flavor is immediate and thick. I love the color of this one too- it is dark amber/red, fitting for a beer with an arrogant gargoyle on the bottle. Arrogant Bastard is a top-notch ale, and pleasantly strong! Update...no change in score, but I found this on tap at Mac & Joes in Oxford, Ohio, a sign that the world is not yet ending, as there is good beer to be quaffed.

[wow, glad I revisited this rating - yea, this stuff is good, but it’s pretty much nothing but highly sweet, with assertive hops] Hmm, quite unique and flavorful. Nice deep amber color w/good lacing. Very malty aroma, with some hints of plums. Very thick body heavy with malts and with decent hops. Oily mouthfeel. Peppery and slighty fruity-sweet. Very barley wine-ish, specifically, very much like Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. This is better, however. I’m very thankful that we can finally get Stone beers in NY.

Another Imperial IPA by Stone. A good overall beer, but simply too much for a standard beer. Good colour and great hoppy nose, as usual...but simply too much to process.

Cloudy light brown with huge dense off white head.Floral hops and toffee carmel malt nose.The malt beginning with alcohol heat that intensifies at it warms. Spicy. As strong as the alcohol is, it doesn’t strongly overpower.However this beer is overrated, especially on this site

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. This beer is knock-your-socks-off strong. Who is worthy indeed? Lively, complex and fervent flavors throughout. A great dessert beer and another winner from Stone.

Light reddish-brown; aroma of dying embers, toffee, cherry cheesecake, earthy hops; this is thick! thick! thick!. Similar flavour profile to Bastard but a lot bigger; dry finish with the highest Lovibond crystal malts involved.

Rerate 05/08/03: Tried this on draught at Barley's Smokehouse. This is just one of those beers that is so unique and difficult to categorize that it is always a pleasure to drink. Pours a deep dark reddish brown with a thin and foamy beige head. Thin lacing. Aroma is alternatingly floral, fruity (citrus mostly), and malty. Medium-bodied and tart, with flavors of citrus, caramel, malt and pine. Complex yet easy to drink, with a nice strong and bitter finish. I have grown to appreciate this beer after having it so many times. 02/21/02 (3.7):I have to admit I didn't like this one on the fist taste, but at ounce 5 or so it started to taste really good. Not sure if this is a beer you want to spend the whole night drinking though, as it is expensive and hard to keep up with. Perfect color and different from the norm, which always scores points with me.

Bottle. If you’re a hophead, this is the one. It’s not over the top as some beers can be and tries to find some balance with the malt, but its the hops that’ll keep you coming back. Re-rate bottled. Known in the Middle-East as Bush Beer this is a soft little mild and unassuming beer...
No. Let's be serious. Reddish ruby in colour with fine, firm head. Aggresive citrusy aroma. Short blast of reasonably soft, clean firm maltiness. Very bitter finish, and (ha!) there is this celery salt flavour. OK, you win... This IS a good beer. Much better than I first thought (and thanks for the beer).
Old rating: Nut brown. Dry, big weird celery aroma, very bitter. A love/hate beer. Must probably taste it again to decide which it is for me, but that is easier said than done on this side of The Pond... 5/4/4/3/8

The best I've ever had brought some wonderful citrusy, leafy hops overtop of the crystal malt. This trend carried through the earthy body. If it's not so fresh, and doesn't have a fresh, rich hop aroma, it gets dominated by that malt and is not nearly as impressive nor enjoyable.
