Rerate, dark garnet. Creamy head. Bittersweet chocolate, a healthy dose of coffee, mild roasted character. Smooth. Really outstanding stuff! Something I could drink alot of.

One of the best vintage beers I ever had was a 1989 Carnegie Porter, aged 11 years. This was the OLD recipe, Klass III version. Absolute masterpiece. This rating is for the new recipe, not aged. That other one was a 5.0.
Amendment: The 1989 is now past its prime. It is still a tasty drop, but no longer a 5.0. Newer vintages tasted - 1999,2001, 2003 are all thin, lagerish and lousy. Avoid. Numbers are a compilation of recent vintages.
Another amendment. I’m beginning to suspect there is a different Carnegie Porter brewed for the American market as a recent sampling of a 2001 showed a full-bodied beer with ample toast and cocoa.

1) don't get the version with 3.5% alcohol. There are stronger versions of this beer available. 2) Word on the street is that this is one of Pripps' better beers. That's too bad.
