Description
It all started with a humble homebrew kit and the drive to make better beer. Tired of the same bland and dated choices everywhere, Air Force friends Eric Wallace and Dick Doore set out to make the kind of beer that excited them; beer they wanted to drink. A hobby quickly became an obsession and it wasn't long before Left Hand Brewing opened for business on January 22, 1994. Left Hand has steadily increased its production, making the Brewers Association’s Top 50 Craft Brewers list in 2012.

16 oz can shared by tfontana. Aroma is a tad odd. Ashy burnt malt. It follows into the flavor. Mild pine cone and old roasted grain. Meh.

Can (best by 5/5/23) pour from The Beer Store, Salem. It's a dark, cola, brown with thin cap of beige head with fair retention and no lacing. Aroma is mix of pine and caramel/sweet malts. Taste follows aroma. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, always nice to have this style--and it's been a while--but, while the requisite elements are there, I wish the piney bite struck a greater contrast with the malts.

Pour is a black with a large tan foamy head. Aroma is a decent enough piney hop. Flavor is again a lot of pine hop but there is also some charred malt and even some bitterness on the back end. Not a beer that is going to wow you but everything your looking for in a black IPA is here.

Pretty good black IPA; doesn’t present the richness or depth of flavor of a truly great black IPA, but does offer black coffee, unsweetened cocoa, and roast notes highlighted by grapefruit and pine. Good enough.

Taster at Beasts & Brews. Pours clear straw, with a medium, foamy, white head. The aroma is orange oils, cloves, sugar cane, and a bubblegum. Sweet and sugary, with a solid estery finish. Medium body, quite lively, and crisp. Nice yeasty character.

Pours a pitch black color with dark amber highlights and a small, tight khaki head with excellent retention. Great lacing too. Okay nitro action for a can. Dark malts and chocolate and coffee aroma. The taste follows the nose: Dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, and coffee flavors blend well together. Very creamy mouthfeel with almost no carbonation. Very smooth and clean. Not sweet like many milk stouts. Light body. Some dark chocolate bitterness.

Prima.

Can from House Of Trembling Madness. Black body with a beige head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of rust, cranberries and Worcestershire sauce. Flavour of blueberries, cranberries and coffee. Thin to medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Rich and tangy.
