Description
Anyone who knows the feeling of pushing boundaries also understands that a great pint tastes best when you’ve earned it. For Al Read and Nigel Tiddy, their love of the outdoors was always balanced by the beer they enjoyed at the end of each day. That’s exactly what led the two former RAF pilots into the world of hops and grains.

The name was inspired by the windswept beaches here in Lossiemouth on the Moray coast where like-minded adventurers gather to pursue their outdoor passions whatever the weather. Al and Nigel felt strongly that the brand should capture the spirit of rugged adventure found here on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. After all, a great pint tastes best when you’ve earned it.

All of our bottled beer is bottle conditioned. A small amount of yeast is added at bottling which allows the beer to ferment further in the bottle. This creates a natural soft carbonation with smaller bubbles. Light filtration and a minimum of mechanical intervention also help to retain all the vivid and defined hop flavours that our brewers work hard to get into the beer. The result – real ale in a bottle.

On tap at BrewDog Liverpool, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out potent spicy whiskey notes, with subtle cocoa and vanillin in back. Flavour has a perfumey quality (from the barrels I assume) and not so much of the peated whiskey I was hoping for. The body is thin, not all that malty or roasty. Not too satisfied with this one.

Keg at BD Castlegate. It pours opaque, jet black with a dense deep tan head. The aroma is rich and unctuous, dark roasted malt, vanilla, cake frosting, toasted marshmallow, heady notes of whisky, charred oak, distant bonfire, rocky road, jammy berry, jam rolly polly drizzled in custard, umami, burnt toast and liquorice. The taste is dry, bitter, dark roasted malts, decadent, unctuous, charred oak, umami, liquorice, warming booze, heady notes of whisky, intense dark chocolate torte, cacao nibs, rocky road, espresso coffee, peppery spice, light tannin, warming booze and plenty of fruity Speyside whisky. Finish charred oak and bitter chocolate. Fulsome body and fine to moderate supporting carbonation. Full of flavour. The aroma is pretty impressive. A beer for someone who likes whisky and intense 99% dark chocolate and not the pastry boiiis.

Cask at GBBF'23, day two, 02/08/23. Pink grapefruit looky with a crimson cap that thins to the edge. Nose is tangy fruit esters, red berry pips, hedgerow, grains, damp hay. Taste comprises soured red berries, grass, grains, light citric sherbets, herb, lactic twang. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced puckering climax. Decent for a cask sour.

On cask at the Stockbridge Tap. Appearance - murky brown, off white head. Nose - sweet or dried citrus. Brown bread. Red fruit too. Taste - red fruit and dried orange. Bready still. Bread and butter pudding. Sweet spice. Palate - medium bodied, creamy middle with a mixture of sweetness and light roast on the finish. Overall - a bit of an English Strong Ale vibe going on with this one. I like it a lot.
