Description
After 700 years, the Aktienbrauerei is the last representative of the Kaufbeurer brewing tradition that started in 1308 under the name "Zur Goldenen Traube". The brewery has been owned by the Walch family since 1799. At its current location, the beer cellar was built in 1807, and the company was converted into a stock corporation in 1885. This made the Kaufbeuren stock brewery one of the first stock companies in Bavaria. In the second half of the 19th century, the brewery was the most important brewery in the city.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from Cambridge Wines. Pours clear gold with a billowing, frothy white head. Light crispy wheat flake character, mellow sweetness, nips of straw, biscuits. Light bodied with lively, massaging carbonation. Decent balance to finish, more mellow wheat, minimal dough, soft citrus accents, a little pear. Tasty enough.

Bottle: Clear, golden, small & persistent white foamy layer, moderate sweet-bitter grainy-malty nose, hoppy aromas hardly detectable; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, hardly medium-bodied; shorter and drier grainy-bitter finish. Yawn. Average Helles, at least drinkable...

Bottle. Nose is very muted faint banana and cloves, metallic. Taste is equally muted banana, yeast wheat, cloves, faint bubblegum. It's muddy looking and a poor example with yeast the dominant flavour.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 8A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch IJ (BBF 25.02.21). AROMA: initial medium-low metallic note that somewhat fades, followed by medium bread crust (maillard) starting to show caramelization from oxidation. APPEARANCE: light ruby color with orange highlights when held against light. medium-low ivory head with medium-low to low retention. TASTE: medium-low malty flavor with bread crust notes. no hop detected. medium bitterness with a dry and slightly bread crust finish. MOUTHFEEL: medium-low body with medium carbonation. OVERALL: an average munich dunkel.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - deep golden, steady carbonation and a neat white head. Nose - light caramel and orange. Bready and slightly grassy. Taste - light honey, caramel and orange again. Bready. Palate - light to medium bodied, tangy and moderate bitterness. Overall - would've liked a little more bitterness on this. OK.

Bottle from The Trembling Madness. Pours clear golden with a thin to medium sized throthy white head. Aromas of cereals, hay, bread and a little honey. Taste has more cereals, hay, bread, a bit more honey and a slight grassy and metallic note on a crisp sweetish finish. Medium body and slightly oily mouthfeel. Ok but slightly below average Marzen for me.
