Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Pour is a complete black with a small tan head. Aroma is great! Lots of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is also decent. Chocolate, coffee and caramel all make an appearence. Probaly not the most flavorful impy stout but still tasty and pleasing to all the sences.

Pours burgundy into a trappist glass. Medium-sized head with good retention and slight lacing as it recedes. Grass and citrus notes. Full bodied and well balanced with up-front caramel and a slight metallic long lasting grapefruit finish.

Dark brown rich appearnce below a short tan head. Roasted malts fill the nose conjuring up thoughts of cholocate and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of prune, chocolate and licorice. Below the malts, the hops are evident resulting in a bitterness in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel though the body is somewhat thinner than other imperials.

2012-12-21, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-14=36
Hazy golden color with small creamy head. Nice aroma, with some fruity hops and some cheesy yeast. Smooth mouthfeel, malt flavor, light biscuity impression; it has a powerful hopping, providing extreme bitterness, resins and some fruitiness.
A solid IPA, but not very fresh character.

2006-03-26, bottle at Freakin’ Frog, Las Vegas, 7-5-8-5-16=41
Hazy amber color; creamy head, nice lace. Nice fruity aroma (apricots). Malty taste, medium strength, with a good fruity aromatic hopping. One American IPA like many others, that is: I like it.

Beautiful copper-gold colour with a sparkling hue; good off-white, frothy head. Amazing, beau-ti-ful dry- C-hops nose, terribly enticing (grapefruit, light resiny, piney). More grapefruit in the taste, but extremely dry; thick wild grapes, tart. There is a certain unidimensionality, but for this type of beer, that’s perfectly OK. Another very drinkable beer. Certain oily slickness, overlying a rather easy drinking beer, medium bodied at best. A top-IPA, which is everything this type of beer ought to warrant. Hilde "Urthel", please retry this for another example...
