15/12/2019. Bottle from The Vine King, Reigate. Pours very dark brown, almost black, with a small beige head. Aroma of milky chocolate, wood, dried fruit, moderate roasted malt, coffee, nut and whiskey. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness, just a touch of tart. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Enjoyable.

Bottle from a Squires garden centre in Laleham. Malty aroma with a medicinal edge. Orange-gold. Thin creamy white head soon shrinks. Medium bitter with some underlying sweetness. Malts and honey plus boiled veg. Mesium bodied. Slick. Flat carbonation. Relatively abrupt finish. Trying to be characterful but shoots itself in the foot with the not entirely pleasant boiled veg notes.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Coffee berry aroma. Dark cola brown. Frothy beige head. Light bitter with a sour berry streak. Liqourice comes through into the finish. Medium bodied. Slick with some creaminess to it. Flat carbonation. Long astringent finish. Better than I was expecting.

Bottle from Squires Garden Centre in Laleham. Floral and citrus, bread and malts. bright gold. Forty white head. Light bitter. Spice and malts. Light bodied. Thin. Fizzy carbonation. Dry finish. Less crisp than I was expecting, definitely a malty UK take on this style. Not too bad.

20/3/2019. Cask at The Black Jug, Horsham. Now 4.5%. Pours dark amber brown with a lasting creamy off-white head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, toffee, fruit, wood and light smoke. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, soft carbonation. Finishes with a little more burnt bitterness. Quite drinkable. From the previous rating I’d suggest this is now a lot better under the new brewery management than it used to be.
