Description
Although Bergquell beer has been brewed since 1846, the company has been a purely regional brewery for a long time. For the 150th anniversary - 1996 - the new building in the industrial area Löbau-West was inaugurated. In 1999, the annual output was 7,000 hectoliters of beer. But within a few years, the company developed into one of the most modern breweries in Europe with a current annual production of around 200,000 hectoliters and a nation-wide reputation in Germany.

Bottle, 4.2% as Lausitzer Erdbeer Porter. Metallic aroma, distinct strawberry jam notes. Clear prune brown colour. Small fizzy head. The flavour is quite sweet with plenty of strawberry. Finishes with a little bitterness that does not go too well with the berry. Gets rather disgusting after half a bottle.

(Bottle on 2008-02-05) Some head. Dark colour with some hints of red. Cherries in nose. Way too sweet. Cherry flavour most certainly is from some flavour additive. Actually quite bad taste. No porter at all.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden body with an off-white head. Matly aroma with a balancing fruityness and a quite unpleasant hint of alcohol. Some cooked vegetables too. Full-bodied and effervescent with flavors of sweet maltyness, decent fruityness and a decent bitterness, lasting all the way to the finish. Fruity and sweet too, in the finish. There’s a warming feeling as well. A quite ordinary dark bock. Rather boring and a bit unclean. (080426)

Bottle. Pours a clear, amber body with a fine beige head. Spiced aroma with clove, cardamom, some almond notes and a hint of cherry. Sweetish. The flavor is sure on the sweet side, cloying, with almond-notes, artificial cherry, and a spicy touch. Rather watery mouthfeel even though it’s sticky sweet, and a finish with some cherry and almond, as well as sugar, cardamom and cloves. Marzipan also comes to my mind, regarding flavor. Not a beer to repeat. (080426)

Re-rate 3/14: Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Tom L. Artificial cherry candy, saccharine, disgusting sickly sweetness and strange unpleasant sourness. Very unpleasant. 3/3/1/2/2=1.1

(3/2/08) Sample from a bottle (thanks to whoever brought this one) at the RB table at Zythos Bier Festival 2008 in Sint Niklaas. Amber color. A weird aroma with some cherry syrup and some artificial sweetener. Saccharine cherry flavor with hints of malt - really sweet. Light to medium body. Quite awful. Quite terrible and no hint of Porter character to be found. 3/3/3/2/6=1.7
