Description
In 1564 for the first time a brewery is mentioned in Svijany. In the following years the brewery was owned by different families. In 1912 it was bought by brewer Antonín Kratochvíle. The Kratochvíle family operated the brewery till 1939. After the war the brewery was confiscated and later nationalized. in 1990 the state enterprise Vratislavice nad Nisou was created, which included Svijany Brewery. In 1998 the company Pivovar Svijany was created, which became the new owner of the brewery. In 2005, it was transformed into a joint-stock company. Gradually Svijany became the strongest regional brand with national importance. The popularity of the brewery is increasing and it is gradually being developed into one of the largest independent breweries in the Czech Republic.
Svijany Brewery is wholly Czech owned and remains one of the last in ‚domestic‘ hands.

(can) Clear golden colour with a short fizzy white head. Aroma of malts and dough with a shy hoppy background. Sweetbitter flavour, sharp carbonisation, medium body. Not unpleasant mouthfeel, well balanced maltiness and smooth hopbitter finish.

On tap at the Brewery Tap in Svijany: Golden coloured, cloudy, thin, lasting firm head; fruity (citrus) aroma with a tinge of hoppiness; soft, sweetish-malty taste, slightly bitter flavour ; bitter-sweet finish. O.K., but not demanding. Seems to be the unfiltered version of the Svijany Bitter. Presumable only available on draught at the Brewery Tap.........

On tap at "U nadeje" Pecice : Deep golden coloured, big, firm, lacing head; malty, sweetish (cookies) aroma; mainly sweetish, a bit bitter flavour; quite full bodied compared to other Lagers of this strength; very short, grainy aftertaste, hops are hard to find. Quite well drinkable, but very unusual for a Bohemian Pilsener, quite near to the "Moravian" style

500 ml bottle, bought at Pivni Galerie, Prague. Typical dunkel reddish brown colour, large lasting off-white/beige head. Moderate malty aroma, notes of caramel and leather, maybe some dark fruits too. Low carbonation, a bit thin mouthfeel, malty sweet with notes of molasses, minimal bitterness. Nice enough to drink, but I’d really like some more hops to balance the sweetness. Must be another beer for the target group "convalescents and nursing mothers".

500 ml bottle, bought at Pivni Galerie, Prague. Golden colour, large lasting head. Strong fruity and flowery hops aroma, some malts in there too, faint hints of leather and camphor. Flavour is a hoppy bitter explosion from start to finish, verging on being too much, but there also is a delicate malty sweetness below which makes the bitterness acceptable. Long, bitter and dry aftertaste. Who said pilseners don’t taste of anything?
