Pitch black colour with a dark brown dense head of 1 centimetre. Aroma of roasted malt & pit fruit. A bit sweet and a bit bitter, but very nice and complex. Medium-bodied; roasted malt taste with very obvious tastes of coffee. More subtle tastes of chocolate and dark fruit: raisins, plums, raisins, etc. as well. The palate is left high & dry, bittered out from the roasted malt! A pretty good beer, spot on for the style and perhaps a bit better than average. Worth trying, because it's probably available to you, if it's available to me in Virginia! I bought my 12 ounce bottle at Total Wine in McLean, Virginia.

Hazy golden in colour with a decently dense white head. Aroma of hops and citrus along with corn. Taste of malt and corn along with a tiny bit of hops. Not a great APA, with more odd flavours more than bright hops! Don't worry about trying this unless you've had all your local APA's and really enjoy trying other examples of the style. I bought this 12 ounce bottle from Total Beverage in Thornton (Denver), Colorado.

Bottled - 2000 vintage sampled in Decmber 2002. Amber colur, no head. Grapefruity hop aroma. Malty, thick, fruity and syrupy. Clean, bold, filling mouthfeel and lingering hop bitterness. If there is such a thing as a middle-of-the-road in barleywines this one comes close.

Bottled. Dark red, little head. Roasty, orangey aroma. Sweet, rather malty with soapy mouthfeel. Intenseely hoppy with lingering bitter finish. The bottle says Produce of USA. No really?! This overhopped and one-dimensional ale is like the prototype of the arrogant American ales. I like it!

Dollars-to-flavor, you can''t find many Stouts better than this. This was similar to Cooper''s and Zonker Stout, which is definitely a good thing. Pours a near-black color with a thin dark beige head. Rather sweet with some chocolate and coffee in the flavor and aroma. A pleasant experience overall, my only complaint is that it could have been a little more rounded.

Very nice - a good roastiness, a bit of sweet stout flavor, some solid hopping. Dark brownish black color with a dark brown big head. Full bodied. Very close, IMO, to Coopers Best Extra Stout.
