Walloon spice beer, one with black cardamom and Jamaican pepper this time, executed at Authentique for a local contract brewer. Thick and pillowy, even somewhat rocky, papery lmacing, greyish off-white, dense and stable head over an initially clear dark orange amber coloured beer with strings of lively sparkling, shifting to a hazy, more bronze-tinged amber with sediment. Aroma overruled by strong black cardamom seed, ras-el-hanout, tandoori spices, dried habaneros flanked by much subtler notes of apple peel, soap, rusk, peanuts and lavender. Very briskly overcarbonated, numbing and distracting from the initial fruity sweetishness that lies beneath, apple peel and very light banana, sourish note with that fizzy carbonation continuing over a very peanutty, ‘hard caramelly’ maltiness with light toasty edges, quickly soaked in ethereal, very soapy, eventually very astringent cardamom supremacy that even largely blots out the Jamaican pepper effect, which is best noticed as a peppery accent blending with the hops in the end; ends unpleasantly wry. I have nothing against cardamom, but like juniper and a few other spices and herbs, I wonder if it has a right place in beer at all; certainly in this case, it is much too obtrusive, creating unnecessary and unpleasant soapiness and wryness. I was never the greatest fan of these overspiced Walloon spice beers and this one, even if ‘updated’ with spice variants more widely used in the modern craft beer scene than in traditional Belgian brewing, fails to convince me otherwise.
