Pours deep red-brown, with a thin tan head. Aroma is an odd blend of wood, roasted malt, and red wine. Interesting flavor- has a nice tangy yet bitter mouthfeel, with lots of roasted malt, oak barrel, a hint of malt vinegar, and licorice. Has a chalky earthy flavor I've also tasted in the Old Flag Porter. My first beer of the style and I am not disappointed.

Bottled, 2004 version
Big foamy tanned head, which is not lasting long. Reddish brown color. Strong alcoholic yeast aroma. Taste is very alcoholic, porterish warming, slightly sweet. Finish is short, a little bit bitter. Now just needs more body, ABV is OK :)

Almost opaque. Tanned creamy head. Aroma sweet and coffee. Starts bitter, medium thin, sweet toffee and roasted malt, some bitter hops in the end. Just too thin to be excellent beer and needs more ABV but otherwise complex enough and one of the best from KOFF brand, like a little brother of brewery's world famous Porter.(6/5/7/4/14 3.6)
Re-rate: (Bottled, BB 03/2005)
Opaque black with tanned brown medium head. Roasted malt, rubbery aroma. Roasted, slightly sweet and medium-bodied. This is not "an ale" but more like "Schwarzbier". (6/5/5/3/14 3.3)

Dark brown color; big, creamy head. Aroma of malt, yoghourt, sweet. Good body strength, a bit oily, roasted malts, light liquorice, light paperboard. Bitterness given most of all by the roasted malt.

Dark brown color; big head. Sweet aroma; malt, corn-like, light vanilla. Not really malty, thin mouthfeel in the beginning, it becomes more bitter, with a lot of caramel and roasted nuts.

2002 or 2003 bottleExtremely dark brown with a roasty nut brown head. Dry burnt roasty aroma, lightly nutty with some interesting tobacco or maple smoke in there as well. Flavor opens up with a dry cocoa powder mixed in with dark, rich roasted barley. Flavor is not as powerful or full as zwyiec, but what it lacks in sheer force of flavor, it makes up in balance and restraint. Good solid roast lingers on, more light smoke adding a slight astringency. Very good. I would be interested to mix this with some zwyiec porter. Alcohol magnificently concealed. 8/5/8/4/17
1998 bottle consumed 11/04 This is vinous, oily, smooth and balanced. Sweet, with light roast notes, plenty of toffee, and a hint of madeirazation. Lightly bitter, slight coffee tinged finish that has a long even lingering presence. Ages marvelously.
1997 bottle but then here was a heavily oxidized, poorly aged bottle, so my theory goes out the window. Hard to believe this big of a change could occur from 98 to 97. Pretty sure it must have been the conditions under which it was kept.
2007 bottle drunk on 10/3/07
Hmmm, it’s good, with a creamy-sweet and rich chocolate maltiness. The poignant berry-like tartness that I’d like from a baltic porter wasnt really all that well represented. I kept trying to find some outstanding things, but just kept being very happy with the warm, easygoing malty tones and drank it down quite unceremoniously, in the end. Some sweeter honey notes are interesting, and lots of plum/raisin do the trick, but uhhh, ya, not much to say here. Perhaps it’s better very fresh, as this had a little age on it and the older vintages (recently had a ’97 and a ’96) had been very inconsistent (though quite good when they were on). Dosent seem unfiltered any more, and though the malts were comforting, the carbonation was weak and the finish a bit watery. Score is for this recent bottle.

Bottle
Black colour, small dark brown/coffee head. Sweet caramel and bread aroma. Mouthfeel very full and smooth. Roasted malt, lightly bitter finish. (7/4/7/5/16 3.9)
Re-rated, bottled (BB 05/2005, brewed in Kerava)
Opaque black with good and steady brown cappuchino head. Nose is fruity, sweet with hints of smoke. Mouthfeel is bitter, full-bodied with roasted malts and dark chocolate. Pleasant bitter aftertaste. (7/5/8/4/17 4.1)
Re-rated Feb 2009 (BB 11/2009). Dark almost opaque brown color, huge espresso head, lace. Dark fruits, caramel malts, roasted malts and licorice in the nose. Full-bodied. Creamy texture. Quite roasted front with lingering licorice, molasses and pick of alcohol. When warms up, some lactose. Although technically impy, there is something baltic porter -like here. Original yeast of this beer was stolen from Guinness brewery in the 1950s. (8/5/8/4/17 4.2)

The best of Finnish basic/bulk lagers. Not much hop. Somewhat darker than the most of Finnish competitors and beer has certain edge comparing to eg. Lapin Kulta III, but differences are not very big. Good beer with food and after sauna. (5/3/5/4/11 2.8)
Re-rate, can brewed in Kerava (BB 01/2005)
Dark-honey lager color, foamy head with lace. Aroma is metal, rubber and malts. Malty, metallic flavor, quite similar to Koff III. Long nice malty aftertaste. (3/2/4/2/7 2.0)
