Ok intensity in the aroma

Another tick from Iceland and from a hitherto (to me) unknown brewery – so thanks again to my girlfriend for bringing back this can all the way from Reykjavik. Irregularly edged, egg-white, opening, barely lacing head, turbid deep peach robe with ruddy-brownish tinge, darker than usual for any NEIPA. Aroma of mango chutney, fig jam, honey pomelo, papaya purée, Cantaloupe, ‘perzikjenever’, baby’s fruit porridge, molten powder sugar, marmalade, passionfruit. Sweet onset, sugary but also juicy, with hints of papaya, mango, mangosteen and blood orange, medium carb with full, creamy mouthfeel; Betterfood pulp-like malt core, much more outspoken in cookie- and bread-like maltiness than is typical for NEIPA, but also deeply soaked in tropical, juicy hoppiness (tropical fruit salad) which also provides a late but effective bitter accent. Some honeyish sweetness lingers – it puzzled me why this “sweet” side is explicitly stated on the can as this is far from custom in any kind of IPA, but I guess the brewery wanted to stress New England IPA’s inherent sweet side by effectively keeping it sugary too – resulting in this rather odd, but admittedly very tasty concoction. In a certain way it almost seems as if they did not quite understand the essence of NEIPA – which really should not be that sweet at all, or at least far less so in actual taste than in aroma – and blindly tried something to come close to it... Whatever the case, for me this approach has worked, but do not expect a clean-cut, typical IPA, rather an idiosyncratic one. Notably sweet as promised too, but enjoyable for sure.

On tap at Micro Bar, Reykjavik. Aroma of tropical fruits, zesty citrus, peach, orange, a subtle spicy note, pine, hops. Flavour is light sweet and medium bitter. Wonderfully fruity IPA, refreshing and well-balanced. My kind of beer.

On tap at Micro Bar, Reykjavik. Aroma of citrus, orange, soft malt, some floral notes, hint of caramel, a spicy note, earthy hops. Flavour is light sweet and medium bitter. Body is light to medium. A nice easy APA.

Lattina. Gushing! Il gusto al naso è indirizzato verso il fruttato. L'olfatto viene stimolato in maniera elevata e l'esistenza olfattiva è sufficiente. Il cappello di schiuma ha una buona tenuta. La grandezza delle bollicine è a grana fine, con carbonazione eccessiva. Il liquido è di consistenza limpida. Bollicine fini costituiscono anche la forma del perlage, con carbonazione allegra, vivace, persistente ed insistita. Il colore è giallo dorato brillante. Il corpo è pieno. L'amaro è contenuto e c'è anche una componente moderatamente acidula. La forza gustativa è molto elevata e la persistenza è buona e duratura. Le sensazioni boccali finali risultano di birra beverina. Il retrogusto è intenso. Al gusto vengono donati toni di miele, crosta di pane, resina, agrumi, pompelmo, arance rossa, limone, mandarino, erbe aromatiche, terra, sour , lampone, rabarbaro e vino rosso.

Gushing! Lattina. Il gusto al naso viene attratto dal fruttato. La finezza olfattiva è normale e il modo in cui permane è sufficiente. Il cappello di schiuma è color rosato. La grandezza delle bollicine è medio-fine, con carbonazione eccessiva. Il liquido si presenta nuvoloso. Il colore è purpureo. Il corpo è pieno. L'amaro è poco presente e c'è anche una componente moderatamente acidula. La forza gustativa è elevata e la persistenza è buona. Le sensazioni boccali finali risultano di birra beverina. Il retrogusto è di decente intensità. L'aroma in bocca porta i segni di miele, frutta secca, agrumi, arancia rossa, lampone, rabarbaro, ciliegia, sour e zolfo.
