Pint can - inky black with no head - nose of coconut, fudge, chocolate, bourbon, and coffee - slick mouthfeel, full body - medium sweet flavor (I appreciate how balanced the sweetness is, given it is a “cake” stout) - flavors of chocolate, whiskey, oak, coconut, light red wine - finish is oak, bourbon, dark fruit - given the strength and style, it is nicely balanced - nice.

Pint can - figured I’d take the opportunity to try something from the place that took over the Ursula Brewery space (that place suuuuucked) - clear dark amber poor with a moderate white lace - nose is caramelized sugars, raisins, dark crusty bread - feels more like an ale in the mouth, and the carbonation is low and soft, almost to the point where this feels cask-conditioned in my mouth - flavor is very roasty, moderately bready, nutty, with a touch of chocolate on the back end - a little sharp, honestly, lacking the smoothness I expect from the style - presents more like an Altbier that a Doppelbock, really - meh - maybe I’ll stop in on my way home from work one day and give them a try, but this isn’t super encouraging - why did Coda Brewing move all the way to Golden? 😫
