Bottle thanks to Kaagie at August tasting. Pours a cloudy orange gold with small white head. The aroma is a lemon peel and wheat. Thin mouthfeel with a bitter malt. Not much goin in with this one.

Tap @ brewery. Moderately hazy, golden yellow appearance with a touch of brown and a cream colored head. Mild to moderate BBQ smoky, woody, mild wheat, slight veggie aroma, though the veggie smell isn’t a hint of an off taste but more something from the smoking of the malts. Initially a light wheat, smooth flavor that develops into a BBQ smoky taste as the beer progresses through the mouth along with a little floral hoppiness. Some of the burnt, woody characteristics come through towards the finish. Roasty, slightly burnt, a touch aftertaste. Very easy drinking beer. The smoke characteristics are more like BBQ smokiness than a charred smokiness. Very tasty beer and again it’s really awesome that these guys are bringing back some old styles and being pretty innovative. (4.1)
Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit III. Picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. The aroma and flavor don’t have nearly as much BBQ or meat smoke as last time I had it on tap last year. Kind of a more burnt woody flavor. The carbonation and wheat malts seem to be a bit more dominant this time. Still a fun beer to drink, but not as good as last time. (3.7)

Tap @ brewery. I put this in as a brown ale but as with many of their styles, it doesn’t fit very well. They call it an old brown ale on oak. Fairly cloudy, orange/brown appearance with an ivory head, kind of like their roggenbier if I remember correctly. Pretty interesting nose. A lighter oak smell that is more vanilla than the charred woody character. Besides the fairly powerful oak, theres toffee, caramel, light cocoa, mild banana-like phenols. A little light bodied. Vanilla, some fruitiness, banana, light toffee, caramel flavor. Vanilla, fruit, oak on the aftertaste. Interesting brew but the oak flavoring is a little weird.

Tap @ brewery. Pretty clear, golden orange appearance with a creamy, ivory head. Pretty mild, a touch caramel-like, noble hoppy nose that kind of makes me think of an altbier/pils/heller bock hybrid. Light caramel, mild to medium malt deeepness, moderately noble hoppy flavor. A touch of fruitiness but mostly a light malt driven brew with a nice noble hoppiness. Almost like a lighter, slightly more caramel-like Dead Guy. Great session brew. This is a Munster-style alt.

I am going to have to go with Aaron on this and say that this should probably be listed as a traditional ale, considering it is an essentially extinct style that predates the Bavarian Purity Law - anyway, pours a fizzy, lightly hazy gold - head dissipates completely - earthy honey sweetness hits the nose first - kind of smells like mead at first whiff - then some doughty yeast, moderate wheat and some peppery notes enter the mix - alcohol far in the back - relatively creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation - starts off a bit tart, with some wheat and lemon/citrus notes - honey sweetness is the dominant character through the middle - dries out a bit on the tail end, bringing some peppery notes, herbal character - just the faintest hint of the molasses in the finish - a bit too hot in the finish, but otherwise fairly tasty.

Bomber picked up from the brewery yesterday - not sure if this should be listed as a wheat wine instead (the label calls it a "hefewein") - it has enough hefe character to justify the current designation, I suppose - turbid gold - fizzy, poory sustained head - aroma is medium sweet, with some notes of apricot and complex phenol character (pepper/spice, strong clove, banana) - it actually smells pretty damn good - medium body - the alcohol is fairly well masked, but there is a great deal of sweetness here - perhaps too much, as the whole middle tastes rather sugary - those strong phenols kick in near the finish, though, bringing some spiciness and strong clove flavors - that sugar sweetness just hangs on, though, lingering long into the finish - a nice attempt, just so damn sweet and lacking the body or complexity you’d want from such a weighty brew.

Growler filled at the brewery a few hours ago - clear straw color - fizzy, short - lived head, but a lively bodied - simple but inviting nose of honey, grassy hops - starts out with medium sweet pils malt and moderate husky grains - dries out through the middle and packs a considerable hop bitterness for the style - lingering, spicy finish - sort of a German/bohemian pils hybrid - the finish is not as clean as I would like, but it is a nice beer nonetheless.

Sampled at the brewery and now from a growler - love me some smoked beer - this one is pushing into imperial porter territory, although it is hard to tell if this is ale or lager yeast as the smoke masks some stuff - anyway, black pour with a thick tan head - warm, woody beechwood smoke greets the nose, followed by some bitternsweet chocolate, light roast, moderate acidity, light esters - love that smoke in the nose, but the acidity throws things just south of perfection - creamy body - surprising acidity up front, with some bright fruitiness - smooths out considerably from middle to finish - burnt/caramelized sugars serve as the base/welcome for earthy campfire smoke - it clings to the burnt sweetness all the way through the finish, as a final punch of acidity ad dry roast counterbalance the lingering sweetness - it works pretty well - I think this would stand an even higher percentage of smoked malt.
