Hippo Beers was founded by Derek Hoy and Alec Knox – two old mates from uni and Glasgow-based beer lovers constantly left frustrated by the lack of quality beers available in the city. We spent ten years exploring the world of beer and trying as many different beers as possible, and we knew that Glasgow was missing out on the depth and quality of beers that are becoming increasingly available from across the UK, Europe, USA and across the globe.

All of this was too much for us to stand by and watch happen. So after becoming disillusioned with the day jobs we set about opening Glasgow’s first speciality beer shop. It took us two years of painstaking frustration and hard work to open Hippo Beers – with the sole aim of bringing a beer revolution to the people of Glasgow and making sure you get the best beers possible.

We’re just two guys who want to sell good beer and showcase the mind blowing range of really excellent beers that are out there. So we might do things a bit differently and we certainly aren’t your average off licence. But we are passionate about beer and we want to bring that passion to the people of Glasgow through Hippo Beers. We hope that you will share that passion with us.

We also didn’t call our shop Hippo Beers just because it is a funky name. We’re called after St Augustine of Hippo Regius – the patron saint of brewers. His life is celebrated on the date of his death, 28th August, which is also the St Augustine of Hippo Feast Day. We’ll be celebrating the Hippo Feast Day annually so keep an eye out on website for plans in the run up to the big event!
