Can picked up from an Albert Heijn supermarket in Utrecht and consumed at home Wednesday 14th January 2026 after homemade Prawn Toast Burgers from the Jan' 2026 GoodFood mag and listening to New Music Fix with Nathan Shepherd and Deb Grant on 6Music. Pours hazy light/mid gold with a white head. Aroma is a bit of citrus, spice, peppery, similar in the taste department, with a light bitterness. Initial sweetness leads to a dry finish. Decent stuff.

Bottle picked up from Köln Hbf yesterday and consumed today Monday 12th January 2026, listening to Nathan Shepherd and Deb Grant with New Music Fix on 6 Music, I had Nidi di Tagliatelle al Forno for tea tonight (Baked Pasta Nests) we had more snow today so up to about 40-45cms now. Pours clear gold, light/mid gold, white head. Subtle nose, there is a touch of bread, a little malt, these are replicated in the mouth, light bitterness. Pretty good, touch sweeter perhaps but I enjoyed it. Score 7.3

We visited here Saturday 10th January 2026, we walked here from Utrecht CS after a day in Amsterdam visiting taprooms in Noord Amsterdam, it's about 25 minutes from the train station, probably less if the pavements were not so treacherous :-) . It is close to Eetcafé de Poort and Café Ledig Erf, though the former seems to have really dipped in terms of beer choice as I recall from previous visits, however it's a nice place, staff friendly and was a welcome stop from the rain. Anyway I am not here to discuss Eetcafé de Poort, It is Brothers in Law that we are here for.

It was a Saturday night and despite getting here well before seven, it was busy, we sat at the bar until a table was available, staff were super attentive, very friendly and despite being a tad overrun, they were not at all stressed, taking everything in their stride. Beer choice (all their own) was very wide ranging and all very good. Inside this place is quite big, it was quite dark with subdued lighting, all very nice but a bit tricky to pick out all the features, suffice to say, you enter from a corner, toilets are in the entrance area, bar is immediately on your right as you enter, also the kitchen is just past here, it’s an open kitchen so you can watch them cooking, they were good fun to watch as they were having a great time. There is an upstairs, sort of mezzanine floor arrangement, it seems to be very popular with the young crowd, there were a few people our age, but not that many 😊.

Food was very good, we both had burgers, Loz has a Smash Burger with Sweet Potato Fries, I had one called OG Burger I think and normal Fries, apparently they dropped one of our portions of fries on the way to our table so went back and got two replacements, so we ended up with three lots of fries 😊. Pricewise I guess it is fair to say it was a little bit more expensive, I think that we had two beers each, burgers, chips and it was about €73 so €80 with a tip, but I would highly recommend it, thanks to Basementonline for another great recommendation.

We visited here Thursday 8th and Friday 9th January 2026. This is a 40 minute walk from the centre, however you can also get a sprinter train from Utrecht CS to Utrecht Zuilen which is a 3 min journey and then it's a 9 min walk, so 12 mins in total, apparently according to Google these trains are every 30 mins. Alternatively, a number 12, 13 or 120 bus from Utrecht CS gets you close, total time 17-18 mins including short walk either side. It's in an area that sort of reminds me of numerous places in the UK where you have an industrial setting where factory units sit alongside a ramshackle collection of funky cafes, bars, art studios, all very random but proudly independent and very different.

Okay onto the place. I was unaware but apparently this used to be an old house boat, in fact also appears to be a former brothel. There are steps up to the door, so access would be quite difficult for those with limited mobility/wheelchair users etc. Inside being a former boat its modest in terms of proportions, a typical rectangular layout with bar to the left, cold room for kegs behind this, there is also a very well stocked German beer fridge behind the bar and a further fridge in front of the bar to the right opposite the entrance. A few table and chairs and then toilets at the rear.

Beer choice was good with 3-4 of their own beers and then a number of guests, about 9 I think. The Boot 122 beers were solid well-made and enjoyable but not massively exciting. We saw two different members of staff, I believe that they were the joint owners, both friendly, first guy on Thursday was quite chatty and spoke about Schonramer beers and how popular they were with their customers, however not that easy to get, I told them that they were super easy for me to get 😊 from many local getrankemarkts.

We really liked it here, its off the beaten track and at this particular time with a mix of ice and snow and pavements that were absolutely treacherous you aren’t going to just stumble across it, you really are aiming to visit it like us. We really enjoy our visits to Utrecht so there is every chance that we’ll be here again. Btw thanks to Basementonline for this recommendation, this was about 15 minutes from our hotel so a really good and helpful recommendation.

We visited here Friday 9th January 2026, we'd did a 13-14 km loop hike today and this was about 3/4 of the way into it. It's located north of the centre about 35-40 mins walk but it's a busy road so I am sure it'll be well served by public transport. It's located on a corner and is a very big place, you really cannot miss it, lots of glass and an industrial appearance, as others mention not unlike a Brewdog.

There's lots of seating, a large bar is quite central the kitchen is off to the side, it's a very informal and welcoming place, after work crowd, couples, older folk, in fact it is very inclusive and not just for a beer crowd. Toilets are behind the bar. It's all on one level (ground floor) and despite a couple of raised areas it's very wheelchair friendly.

Beer choice was very good, staff very friendly and it's table service. There were a few guest beers in a fridge opposite the bar I picked up an Imperial Stout from De Magisstrat brewery. We liked it here and despite being further out would definitely revisit. I think that if you were into a longer trek then this could make a great stopping off point en route to the vandeStreek Proeflokaal/ Taproom which is a further 40 mins walk north west of here. Thanks to Basementonline for this recommendation, we really liked it here, very chilled place.

On tap at Brothers in Law Taphouse, Utrecht, Saturday 10th January 2026, after a treacherous walk around Nord Amsterdam from Buiksloterweg boat mooring and then Lowlander and then Oedipus and Walhalla, but now back in Utrecht and here. Hazy mid gold with a white head. Nice soft mouthfeel, wow this is very easy drinking for the abv however you do know that it has a kick. Some sweetness, overipe fruits, there's a little orange. Good. Score 7.4

Hazy light amber with a white head. Nice soft mouthfeel, fresh, a little spicy edge, the bitterness is light but it builds. There's a little bit of sweetness. Score 7.3
