16 oz can that was given to me by my friend Chris. The pour is black brown, opaque, with a two inch khaki head that is lasting. Eventually falls with a pretty coating of lace. The aroma is roast, soft charred wood, brown sugar, pine and a soft fruit I can’t quite identify. The taste char roast malt upfront, then turns towards a whisper of brown sugar and finishes with quite a bit of pine, earth and mineral to the finish. The palate is medium bodied, soft natural carbonation and the dry, pine earth mineral crisp finish. Nice Export Stout, thanks, Chris.

Approximately 10 oz draft pour at Boulevard Brewing Co. Tours & Recreation Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is clear reddish amber, orange, brown with a small foamy off white head. The aroma is big wood right away, very much fresh oak, song with floral, spice and some general caramel malt. The taste is the wood up front, followed by the floral, Saison yeast and general maltiness. Not terribly integrated or subtle. The palate is medium bodied, low carbonation and lingering, mouth drying oak wood.

750 ml bottled purchased and shared by my friend Chris at Oak and Steel in Kansas, Missouri. The pour is a clear amber, reddish with a small off white head. The aroma is funk and barnyard, oak wood and really engaging cherry fruit. The taste is big bright tart cherry and lacto sourness, followed closely by the wood, finishing with musty Brett character. All flavors are really well integrated. The palate is light to medium bodied, soft natural carbonation and a lingering cherry tart, earthy finish. Tasty stuff, thanks for this one, Chris.

Visited later on a Friday evening for a beer at the bar. Big shiny new place on the corner of a busy Prairie Village corner. Parking is in the lot in front, or overall flow lot to the west. Large outdoor space in front, with tables, and an area for kids to run around. The interior is quite large, with a big bar area and a large restaurant area, and a private room. Nice, clean modern design. Beer selection is 14 house beers, and a couple of guests. Beers are available as 7 oz or full pour, with a fair number available to go in cans. Service was prompt and friendly. Very ambitious addition to the local scene - will be a good place to bring a group.

0.5 L Tall Kolsch looking glass at Big Grove Brewery in Prairie Village, Kansas. The pour is a slightly cloudy golden with a smaller white head. The aroma is bright floral, along with some hop resin and a touch of cracker malt. The taste is the cracker malt, along with the floral resin hop then finishes in a sort of muddled earth finish. The palate is light to medium bodied with soft carbonation and the dry earth mineral, dirty finish.

Visited several times for dinner and lunch. Located in the center of Old Overland Park, this can be challenging to find parking. If you are willing to walk a block or two, plenty of street parking is available in nearby neighborhoods. Big space, with the food order counter immediately in front of you. The large bar is behind, and seating spread all around the building, including a loft space above the bar. Similar to the Crossroads Buffalo State Pizza, the food menu is salads, sandwiches and pizzas. Beer selection is very well chosen, focused on local breweries and covers a wide range of styles. Service was at the bar, and was quick and friendly.
