16 oz can purchased at Fieldwork Brewing Company in San Leandro, California. The pour is a hazed yellow golden with a two inch white foamy head that is quite lasting. Eventually falls with splotchy lace. The aroma is soft herbal, grass, hay, soft Saison type yeast along with grain. The taste is wheat grain, soft hay, clove, herbal and finishes with a hint of citrus peel. The palate is medium bodied, soft to low carbonation and a silky mouth feel.

Visited midday on a Friday. Located in a shopping center, plenty of parking all around. Typical liquor store setup, with the beer in the back wall cooler as well as a section in the middle of the store. The cold beer selection has a ton of local craft breweries, almost all available as singles. The real feature of this store is the middle section. The collection of bottles represents would would be nirvana 10 or 15 years ago, with a bunch of the tops beers from that era. I saw a Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale, 3 Fonteinen Hommage, De Molen 1914 Porter, Struisse Black Albert, and many, many others. The beers were almost all covered with a layer of dust, and it truly felt like a hidden stash. Prices seemed perhaps a touch high, but I didn’t really compare prices to elsewhere. Definitely worth checking out to poke around and see what you can find from this time warp.

Shaker pint draft at Sailing Goat in Richmond, California. The pour is a clear golden with a white head that leaves behind great lace. The aroma is cracker malt with herbal grassy hops. The taste is a nice blend of the slightly honey sweet malt and the herbal grassy hop. The palate is light to medium bodied, active carbonation and a nice clean finish. Nice Pils.

Visited later evening on a Thursday. Located on a side street in Walnut Creek’s central area, it has a Belgian Brown Café feel as you enter. Open room when you enter, with a tight bar space in back. 18 beers on draft, several Belgian and Belgian style options, with a really interesting and top notch selection. In terms of the bottle shop aspect, there are four cooler doors of cold beer and another room with bottles with a table right in the middle. With folks drinking at the bar, and at the table in the bottle selection, it was pretty tight to actually browse the high quality bottle selection. Good vibe, fun stop.

Draft at ØL Beercafe & Bottle Shop in Walnut Creek, California. The pour is a slightly hazed yellow golden with a white foam head that leaves behind thick lace. The aroma is bread, cracker malt, mineral, and a soft herbal spice. The taste is crisp and fresh cracker bread malt, mineral and the herbal spice. The palate is medium to light bodied, unfiltered mouth feel and the crisp clean mineral finish. Delicious and crazy drinkable.

Visited on a Thursday evening. Large building, seating throughout the room, with the bar towards the front. The entire room has a large window to the huge malting floor. 21 beers on draft all of which feature Admiral malt including one cask offering. A lot of unique styles, and a bunch of breweries I had never even heard of. They had two Hidden Splendor beers, which is Dave McLean’s new project. It was trivia night, and the place had a very chill vibe. To go cans are available from a variety of breweries in a front cooler. Almanac is next door, Faction around the corner. Had a food menu that looked solid. Really unique and well executed place. I really enjoyed my time here.

Nonic cask pint at The Rake at Admiral Malting in Alameda, California. The pour is an opaque black brown with a small foamy tan head. The aroma is roast, softly char malt, along with the essence of coffee. The taste is super clean and fresh roast malt flavor, the roast, and finishes with toast malt. The palate is medium bodied with a soft cask body. Silky smooth with a clean finish. Really nice cask expression, very tasty stuff. I learned that Hidden Splendor is Dave McLean’s new brewery.
