The Fox Cub is a comfortable little micropub with a wine bar feel. It's pretty new and compact with AOR playing on the speakers. Couples mostly, and lots of doggies. The beer is what you'd expect: 3 cask and 3 keg from Charnwood. Mostly core, and only one of these is new to me but I've had a lot of Charnwood so the uninitiated may get a lot more. There are some decent pubs in Barrow but this may be the best of them, and is at least the closest to a ticking pub.

Keg draught at the Fox Cub, Leicester. Light Amber and clear with a small and quickly dissipating white head with good lacing. Light Hop, metallic, some caramel and a gluey aroma. Taste is sweet, more glue, some resin. Light body with seriously heavy carbonation. Not all that keen. Considering Charnwood, the non alcoholic beer world has changed, you can do better!!

700ml bottle bought from Seoul Plaza, Leicester and drunk at home. Hazy white/grey, no head. The natural rice aroma is fighting with the artificial peach laid on top. Taste pretty good, if artificial.peach gives it a sweetness that doesn't overwhelm alongside the rice flavour. Light body, almost no carbonation. Reasonably refreshing.

Bought for me as a gift, I think from House of Tembling Madness. Drunk at home. I couldn't wait for Santa. I say very very very dark brown, missus says black. Light aroma of roasted malt, walnuts, chocolate. Taste is sweet but not too much so, with a light bitterness (again nicely balanced) in the finish. Cola nut and walnut in the aftertaste. Light to medium body with heavy carbonation. A beer that just hangs together incredibly nicely.

330ml bottle bought from Seoul Plaza, Leicester. Drunk at home. A pleasant lighter shade of gold, clear, little head. Light sugary and slightly skunky smell. Taste is sweet but it is also sweet-skunky. Like drinking the piss of someone with the most severe diabetes on the planet. Which might be me, after drinking this. But in its own way it isn't terrible. I've had far worse. Light body with medium carbonation. Never again but hey ho, it's a drinkable enough (just) tick.

Oundle Wharf, which houses the Nene Valley Tap & Kitchen, is somewhat out on its own, in the northeastern outskirts of Oundle (the Peterborough side). It's quite an impressive outfit, more restaurant than bar, although drinkers are welcomed in a small bar area. It's a little bit aloof, with a full restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. Food smelled great but the food prices are insane for this part of the country. Beers on the other hand are slightly high priced but within reason. There are about 13 beers available, all Nene Valley except for an Aspalls and Staropramen. 5 cask and 8 keg. Beers are fairly safe and sessional but overall of a very good quality. Maybe not worth a trip out except for a meal (and if you do, for God's sake book ahead) and not really ticker-oriented although I got three.

gave a cheers!
