Pours a big foamy head, over an opaque yellow beer. Strong nose of American Pale Hops. Some lemon, bong water, and pine resin. First taste is slightly sticky and sharply hoppy. Despite its strong hop punch, it's kind of easy drinking. But then the sharpness keeps hitting with each sip.One of those movie slaps where the slapee says "Thanks, I needed that."

750 ml bottle from TJ's Downer's Grove.
Well, I'm not going to be shy about new ways to be drinking! Into my FoBAB sampler glass it goes. So: clear as vodka, but without the light distortion of alcohol swirling around. Don't know how this is supposed to smell, but this is very nice. Light plum and a bit floral barely masks a nose of alcohol. First sip is hard to even feel in your mouth, it instantly assumes body temperature. The nose: I'll call it chrysanthemum, but to me it's just a light flowery taste. Again a touch of fruit, But each sip manages to start out nearly insubstantial before infusing my mouth with its delicate flavor; and leaving an bit of alcohol burn in its wake. This is fascinating stuff.

Bottle, warmed in pan of hot water. Dang! A stab at a second sake, and it's the same style as my first. Will this amusement never end?
Okay. This one is somewhat banana-ey on first sniff. Tasting leaves some harsh alcohol in the sides of my mouth. Doesn't leave as much play as the Hakusan I had earlier. However, I do get an interesting peppermint impression on the tip of my tongue. But that's about it.

Yeah, a chance to tick just one more sake category. Color is of a light, cloudy ginger ale. Pours a bit of mango smell with edges of ginger, as expected. Not really a "sake" smell, but it's nice,. Fizziness suggests this was carbonated. Taste, though, I can't say is good. Seems nice and fruity, but more like a mango-ginger wine cooler would be. I just don't see Japanese businessmen enjoying this with dinner. I just see schoolkids swigging this like an energy drink. 5/10/09 0:16

Slightly yellow tinge in the tiny ceramic cup. Smell is a bit alcoholic, but more warming than solventy. Thereâ's a delicate flavor with a bit of plum brandy, but it's mostly washed down by the alcohol.

Much cleaner smell that the Gekkeikan Gold I just had. Clear color. Taste is more ephemeral, lighter alcohol and again a hint of plum flavor.
