Bottle at Hops, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small frothy cream head. There’s an enticing aroma of roasted malts, bacon, dark fruits and raisins. In the mouth it is quite bitter but with some sour hints. Figs are the immediate and strongest flavour, but there are also several others including molasses, Belgian yeast, sweet candy, spice, dried fruit and alcoholic strength. Finish is dry and boozy. This is excellent – similar to the Christmas beer but not so spicy.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma is somewhat insipid - - just hints of roasted malts, biscuits and honey. In the mouth it is quite sweet and smooth with a creamy texture, but with a little underlying berry fruit sharpness. These and roasted malts are the main flavours, but also hints of chocolate and liquorice. Sharpness lasts into the fruity finish. This is reasonable – but a bit strange.

Can from local ASDA store – drank at home. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small frothy beige head. The aroma has lactose, roasted malts, coffee and a hint of nuts. In the mouth it is very briefly sweet before sharp fruitiness comes through. Flavour has roasted malts, oats, coffee grounds and lactose. Some bitter chocolate and caramel comes through later. Finish is somewhat dry. This is nice – but nothing like as awesome as Broken Dream.

Bottle from local Polish shop, drank at home. Pours golden yellow with sizable, but transient frothy off-white head. Aroma can be either sweet or nutty, depending on angle of glass ! In the mouth is is briefly sweet malts and corn that catch the attention, before some continental hops and bitter metallic taste come through. Metallic feeling lasts into the finish. This is a pretty average macro lager – not for me.

Cask at Pickled Pig, Stafford. Pours “bitter brown” with a medium sized foamy off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s traditional hops and malts in the aroma plus hints of toffee and nuts. In the mouth it is quite bitter with a creamy texture. Flavours are traditional hops, grass, caramel and wholemeal bread. Finish is quite dry and flightly fruity. This is reasonable.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with minimal beige head and good lacing. There’s roasted malts, coffee and tea leaves in the aroma. In the mouth it is basically sweet but with some bitter hints and a fairly watery texture. Flavours are coffee, earl grey tea, lactose, roasted malts, and hints of ginger and spice. Finish is somewhat dry. This is reasonable but not exactly exciting.
