Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours almost black with a small tan head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly roasted malts plus some biscuits, cake and shortbread. Roasted malts to the fore again in the mouth where it is sweet with a creamy texture and depth. Plenty of ginger and chocolate too together with alcoholic strength. Some liquorice strands come through later leading to a quite boozy finish. This is excellent ! Plenty of flavour but retains the stout base beautifully.

Bottle at Hops, Crewe. Pours a bright golden amber with medium sized frothy almost white head soft carbonation. The aroma is mainly spices with hints of banana and bread rolls. In the mouth it varies between sweet and sharp but with the latter increasing. Flavour is wonderfully complex with Belgian yeast, cloves, spices, alcoholic strength and hints of citrus. Later on there are traces of corn, crackers and oranges as well. Sweetness lasts into a boozy finish. This is nice – a top class tripel.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours pale straw with a small almost white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops in the aroma alongside biscuits and lemongrass. In the mouth it starts off basically sweet but quickly some sharpness becomes evident too. Flavour is mainly citrus incorporating lemon, grapefruit and floral hops. Hints of corn and mango come later too leading to a rather dry and sticky finish. This is reasonable.
